Position Summary
The Senior Accountant plays a key role in ensuring the financial integrity and transparency of the parish. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing timely financial reports, overseeing parish accounting processes, and ensuring compliance with Diocesan Finance Manual policies and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). The Senior Accountant supports the mission and ministries of the Catholic Church through sound stewardship and fiscal management.
Key Responsibilities:- Maintain the general ledger in Quick Books, ensuring accuracy and consistency with the Diocesan chart of accounts.
- Collaborate with CPA firm on monthly close, reconciliations, payroll and other essential accounting functions
- S.C.C.B. Charter for Safe Environments on Virtus compliance policy and adheres to the civil laws and reporting procedures.
- Prepare and post journal entries, reconcile bank and investment accounts monthly.
- Performs accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll functions.
- Regularly analyze cash flow data and prepare analytical explanations for management.
- Record parish and religious education income, including offertory, donations, grants, and rents revenues.
- Track restricted and designated funds to ensure compliance with donor intent.
- Assist in budget preparation and monitor actual performance to budget.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and variance analysis for the Pastor and Parish Finance Council.
- Support parish audit and provide requested documentation to diocesan auditors.
- Ensure compliance with parish and diocesan financial policies, including internal controls and segregation of duties.
- Analyze financial data and prepare management reports highlighting trends, variances, and recommendations.
- Prepare required reports for the Diocese of Bridgeport and external agencies as needed.
- Process, reconcile and submit 1099’s.
- Maintain and file all supporting schedules for insurance, benefits, and payroll reconciliations.
- Implement and monitor internal control systems to safeguard parish assets.
- Support stewardship initiatives by ensuring financial transparency and accountability.
- Work collaboratively with the Pastor, Parish Finance Council, and ministry leaders.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all parish financial matters.
- Performs Other Duties as assigned.
Experience and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- Minimum 2-3 years of accounting experience, preferably in a non-profit or faith-based organization.
- Strong proficiency in Quick Books Desktop or Quick Books Online.
- Working knowledge of GAAP and fund accounting.
- Experience with payroll systems, bank reconciliations, and audit preparation.
- Excellent organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Office applications.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to the mission and values of the Catholic Church.
Salary Range: $75K-$95K
