The Public Safety Officer, under the supervision of the Public Safety Lt., patrols assigned areas of the Medical Center to identify and respond to unsafe conditions and emergencies. The officer answers calls for service relating to unauthorized or illegal activity within the building or campus grounds. Officers respond to emergencies and calls to assist with combative patients or visitors, fire alarms, infant/child abduction, active shooter, etc.

On a routine basis officers perform inspections for hazards and unusual situations, lock or unlock doors, handle trespassing issues, property receipt and issue, deceased patient transport, and routinely test and inspect Public Safety and safety equipment throughout the campus monthly.

Responsibilities
  • Patrol assigned areas to identify and respond to unsafe conditions and emergencies.
  • Answer calls for service pertaining to unauthorized or illegal activity.
  • Respond to emergencies and assist with combative patients or visitors, fire alarms, infant/child abduction, active shooter, etc.
  • Perform routine inspections for hazards and unusual situations; lock/unlock doors.
  • Handle trespassing issues, property receipt and issue, deceased patient transport.
  • Test and inspect Public Safety and safety equipment monthly.
  • Document all rounds, write reports on incidents, and submit reports by shift end.
  • Use the RMS Public Safety incident computer system and the VH Risk Qual System.
  • Correct problems or write work orders, memos, or reports to safety officers when safety‑related problems are observed.
  • Inspect fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, and conduct/assist in other safety inspections.
  • Test and check alarm system equipment; perform fire watches when requested.
  • Monitor camera systems, infant abduction systems, fire alarm systems, medical gas alarms, and generator alarms.
  • Investigate reports of loss and damage property and criminal activity.
  • Assist law enforcement within custody of individuals as needed.
  • Search patient rooms and property for contraband and take proper safety steps.
  • Respond to Air Care landing and take offs.
  • Provide detailed directions when requested and escort staff members during off‑business hours.
  • Provide patient and staff Public Safety and stand‑by for terminations and TDO hearings.
  • Escorts disgruntled individuals from the building or property.
  • Respond to emergency calls consistently, using sound judgment and discretion in handling such calls.
  • Assist special needs patient populations, transport patients to BHS, monitor ECO/TDO patients, intervene in disputes, and maintain order.
  • Provide assistance to staff when they are working with an aggressive person and intervene to prevent injury.
  • May be exposed to chemicals and persons with various illnesses and aggressive behaviors.
Education

High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience

One year of experience in law enforcement, public safety, college, and/or fire departments is preferred.

Certification & Licensures
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) - American Heart ‘Healthcare Provider’ (HCP) – AHA approved required.
  • AHA appropriate certification prior to completion of orientation required.
  • International Association for Healthcare Public Safety and Safety Basic Exam within 1 year required.
  • ASP baton, handcuff, OC foam spray, and aggression management training within 6 months required.

  • Competent to successfully interact with individuals of varying backgrounds and ethnicities.
  • Ability to work with individuals with special needs.
  • Ability to display compassion when the situation requires.
  • Ability to help ease pain and suffering, and help others.
  • Availability for duty assignment at any Valley Health System facility.
  • Ability to work on alternate shifts and flex schedule.
  • Ability to work on holidays and weekends.
