Job Description Purpose and ScopeUnder general supervision, the Part Time Assistant II assists students, faculty, and the general public in obtaining library circulating and reserve resources. Basic duties may include receiving, logging, and interpreting information; sorting and processing library materials deliveries; answering non‑routine questions and inquiries; providing information and directions; and providing a customer‑friendly environment. Activities are routine but may involve non‑routine requests or specialized information.
EssentialJob Functions
- Use the Horizon Information Management System and the People Soft database to perform circulation service
- Assist library patrons; serve as public contact for the library in person, by telephone and email; screen and refer patrons to reference librarians when professional assistance is needed
- Open or close the facility for library operation, including cash register setup in the absence of the Specialist III, Circulation; record daily activity statistics; perform collection inventory and shelf reading
- Interpret and enforce circulation policies and procedures for students, college staff, and the community
- Activate college /library cards for faculty, staff, and students; issue HCPL library cards to public patrons
- Operate the Circulation Department in the absence of the Specialist III, Circulation
- Participate in the development of documentation for and implementation of circulation procedures
- Collect monies for fines and lost materials and update patron records accordingly
- Assist library patrons in the use of laptop computers, copy machines, the pay‑print system, fax machine, and other audiovisual equipment
- Perform other reasonable, related duties as assigned
Skills and Abilities
- Working knowledge of office practice and procedures
- Working knowledge of personal computers and common office software such as Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook
- Knowledge of Horizon Automated Library System
- Knowledge of People Soft
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
- Ability to prioritize duties using sound customer service principles
- Ability to interpret policies and procedures

The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying of light items such as papers, books, or small parts, or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
Work Schedule and Conditions- Equipment used includes a PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone, and other general office equipment
