This position is responsible for conducting origin & cause investigations of fire and explosion incidents, including site inspection and documentation; evidence examination; research, analysis, testing and reporting. The role involves evaluations of mechanical systems, mechanical equipment, appliances and fuel‑gas systems.

• Prepare and review project proposals or plans to determine timeframe, funding limitations, procedures for accomplishing the project, staffing requirements, and allocation of resources.
• Confertain with project staff to outline work plan and assign duties, responsibilities, and scope of authority.
• Perform field inspections of residential, commercial, transportation and industrial structures and facilities to determine cause and origin of reported or suspected damages and assess condition.
• Conduct field and laboratory tests of fuel‑gas (primarily natural gas and propane) systems, including piping, regulators, meters, valves and related equipment.
• Conduct evaluations of failure mechanisms of appliances, mechanical equipment and HVAC equipment.
• Prepare technical, project‑related reports for clients as required.
• Confertain with project personnel to provide technical advice and resolve problems.
• Learn to conduct well‑developed client presentations and technical conference presentations.
• Perform marketing and business development to identify potential clients and build a client base.
• Willing to testify in court proceedings (depositions and/or trials) on behalf of clients as required.

• 3+ years of experience in forensic consulting, working with the insurance and legal fields.
• Strong background in fire science and technology, mechanical/electrical theory and systems, fire protection.
• Skilled in fire origin and cause investigation with extensive field investigative experience.
• Thorough understanding of industry‑accepted fire and explosion standards (NFPA, ASME, ASTM, etc.).
• Experience ranging from structural fires to machinery and equipment failures to electrical power generation and distribution, covering industrial machines, HVAC equipment, construction and heavy machinery, consumer electronics, appliances, tools, and all types of transportation elements such as commercial/industrial vehicles.
• Areas of expertise include:
  • Fire and explosion investigation

  • Motors, generators and switch gear
  • Electrical and electronic systems
  • Test apparatus and fixtures
  • Personal protection equipment

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited engineering school.
• Master’s or PhD preferred.

• PE license or ability to obtain one.
• CFEI or CFI certification preferred.

• Intermediate/advanced skills in Microsoft Office; internet software skills.

• 2+ years’ work experience, including internships or consulting engineering firm experience.
• Interest or expertise in fire and explosion investigation, natural gas or propane generation, distribution and use, mechanical and piping systems and equipment.
• Ability to interact with clients professionally and develop business internally and externally.
• Clear and concise oral and written communication skills.
• Availability to travel 50% of the time, including 33% field/site inspections, on weekends and holidays as required.
