Job Summary
The Permit Technician is responsible for processing and issuing various city‑related permits in compliance with local regulations and building codes. This role involves working closely with contractors and property owners to ensure all required documentation is accurate and complete. The technician also provides information on permitting processes, assists with permit applications, and maintains detailed records. Coordination with multiple departments ensures timely approvals and inspections for construction and renovation projects.
Strong attention to detail, excellent customer service skills, and a solid understanding of building codes and permitting software are essential.
Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent plus two years of experience in a building or planning department, including at least six months of experience processing computerized permit applications; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements: ICC Permit Technician certification is required or must be obtained within one year of employment. Bilingual in Spanish is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures, familiarity with building plans, codes, ordinances, and related terminology.
- Knowledge of permitting software such as Open Gov or Blue Prince, preferable.
- Knowledge of the processes and procedures associated with the construction permitting process.
- Strong attention to detail with a focus on ensuring data entry accuracy.
- Skill in both written and oral communication.
- Ability to provide excellent customer service.
- Ability to quickly learn and apply departmental policies and procedures related to the acceptance and review of permit applications.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to work with a wide variety of people, including industry professionals, internal staff, and the general public, while maintaining composure under difficult circumstances.
- Ability to complete tasks with multiple distractions.
The work is primarily sedentary, with occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and/or frequent or constant negligible force to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects. Fingering, lifting, and speaking are necessary physical abilities.
