Under the supervision of the Director of Laboratory, Pathologist, Laboratory Manager and Lead Histotechnologist, the Histotechnologist is responsible for the efficient and accurate preparation of specimens processed in the Histology section of the Laboratory in accordance with accepted practices and Departmental and Hospital standards of care.
Each patient is assessed by appropriate disciplines beginning at the time the patient enters a hospital service and progressing through discharge. The person in this position demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide clinical laboratory services to patients served in relation to growth and development over the life span to identify their requirements relative to age‑specific needs.
What you will do in this role- Maintain carefully organized slide and tissue block files. Maintain actual tissues and specimens for prescribed times and in a readily retrievable manner.
- Assure and document proper routine maintenance of all Pathology equipment as scheduled by policy. Maintain general housekeeping of the Pathology lab and assure that flammables are stored appropriately and that formalin and other chemicals are properly discarded into waste containers for pickup by the chemical waste management company.
- Process all specimens forwarded to reference laboratories per requirements of the receiving laboratory. Record in a log (manual or electronic) all information regarding further testing by reference facilities. Assist in maintaining all reports from the reference labs, documenting their receipt in Hospital LIS.
- Maintain adequate inventory of Section supplies. Review supply within the Section weekly and advise the Lead Histotechnologist of needed orders.
- Stock supplies when they arrive.
- Clerical duties include, but are not limited to, the completion and/or interpretation of Pathology forms, requisitions, reports, logs and charge sheets. Respond to lab phone calls efficiently and in a timely manner.
- Responsible for the day‑to‑day functions associated with the laboratory computer system.
- Perform other related duties assigned by the Director of Laboratory, Laboratory Manager, Lead Histotechnologist, or Pathologist.
- Histotechnologist must be obtained within 1 year of employment start date (HTL‑ASCP).
- Bachelor’s Degree.
