Purpose Statement

Teach students basic academic, social, and other formative skills through instruction in one or more subjects. Promote physical, mental, and social development.

Essential Functions
  • Identify the educational needs of students and develop formal educational plans or programs to meet those needs.
  • Create lesson plans to teach subjects and instruct students on how to study or communicate effectively.
  • Observe students to evaluate their educational abilities, strengths, and weaknesses, working with them to improve and address challenges.
  • Teach and mentor students individually, in small groups, or as a class.
  • Communicate with family members, counselors, administrators, and other teachers regarding student progress.
  • Assist students in overcoming specific learning challenges and prepare them for standardized tests as required by the state.
  • Document educational plans, goals, and progress according to facility and state requirements.
  • Supervise the classroom environment, enforce rules, and maintain a positive learning atmosphere.
  • Supervise students outside the classroom, such as during lunch or detention.
  • Adhere to treatment plans and participate in team meetings as needed.

    Perform additional duties as assigned.

    Education/Experience/Skills Requirements

    Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field eligible for state certification or licensure. Preferably with at least one year of experience working with the facility's population. Knowledge of developmental stages and behaviors for the age group is essential.

    Licenses/Certifications

    Current state teaching certification or license. Valid Special Education Certification or willingness to obtain it upon hire. First Aid, CPR, de-escalation, and restraint certifications are required (training provided upon hire).

    Additional Regulatory Requirements

    APL Certified.
