The News Editor works closely with top management to contribute content and assist staff in the creation of high-quality print and digital products for publication. The news editor manages personnel in conjunction with the EIC and adviser, makes assignments and provides first edits for news staff and candidate articles according to AP style. The news editor demonstrates excellence in writing, editing and management.
This person is dedicated to telling the truth and putting in time to better the newspaper. The news editor is a paid position.
Essential duties of position:
- Reports directly with the managing editor/content
- Manages team of reporters and first-time candidates, including the handling of personnel issues in coordination with the EIC and student media adviser
- Participate in monthly newspaper distribution
- Attend meetings held by the newspaper adviser
- Assign articles to staff and ensure completion through consistent communication
- Participate in all news candidate recruitment, interviewing, selection and mentorship activities
- Facilitate weekly story assignment meeting with team of news reporters and candidates
- Assist in sharing journalism practices with staff writers through joint meetings and one-on-one meetings
- Meet for the story budget with executive staff to pitch story ideas and discuss design options
- Attend and participate in full staff meetings
- Edit news staff, news candidate, and the editor in chief's articles according to AP style
- Personally contribute coverage of stories when needed
- Maintain minimum of three (3) scheduled office hours per week
- Perform any other pertinent duties as assigned
An evaluation of job duties will be done in March of the spring semester to determine future employment for the following year. This is determined by successful completion of all essential job duties and an evaluation by the adviser.

Required Qualifications
- Must have and maintain a cumulative 2.5 GPA
- Must be a full-time student (minimum of 12 semester hours) and not on academic or disciplinary probation
- May not hold an elected or appointed position with the Student Government Association, including class officer positions
