Position: Experienced Small Engine Mechanic

Experienced Small Engine Mechanic in Cookeville, TN

A local company is looking for an Experienced Small Engine Mechanic for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of motorized outdoor power equipment. This role focuses on ensuring that machinery—such as lawn mowers, chainsaws, and trimmers, and or Powersport equipment—operates safely and efficiently for both residential and commercial users.

Key Responsibilities
  • Diagnostics:
    Troubleshoot and identify electrical, mechanical, and fuel system malfunctions using specialized diagnostic instruments and computerized equipment.
  • Maintenance:
    Perform routine preventive services, including oil changes, spark plug replacement, air filter cleaning, and blade sharpening/balancing.
  • Repair:
    Overhaul, repair, or replace defective engine parts such as carburetors, pistons, fuel systems, and ignition systems.
  • Equipment Testing:
    Reassemble engines and test their performance under various loads to verify that repairs meet manufacturer specifications.
  • Customer Service:
    Communicate with customers, explain necessary work, and offer advice on proper equipment operation and care.
  • Documentation:
    Maintain accurate records of all repairs performed, time spent on each job, and parts used for inventory management.
Skills & Qualifications
  • Technical Knowledge:
    Proficiency in two-stroke and four-stroke engine operation, drivetrain components, and hydraulic systems.
  • Dexterity:
    Strong hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity for disassembling and reassembling intricate small engine components.
  • Problem-Solving:
    Strong analytical skills to determine the root cause of engine failure through logical testing.
  • Education:

    High school diploma or GED is typically required; prefer candidates with vocational training or postsecondary certificates in small engine repair.
  • Certifications:

    Optional certifications from the Equipment & Engine Training Council (EETC) or specific manufacturers (e.g., Briggs & Stratton, Kohler, or Power Sport Engine) are highly valued.
Schedule

Full-time hours are standard, with frequent overtime during the peak spring and summer seasons.
