Job Summary
The Upward Bound Summer Assistant is a temporary, seasonal position that offers supervision and advisement to high‑school students during the TRIO Upward Bound Summer Program. The role ensures the well‑being of program members in grades 9‑11—covering health, safety, morale, discipline, interpersonal relationships, and academics—during both residential and non‑residential portions of the six‑week program. Assistants are expected to reside in assigned housing during the designated residential week.
Responsibilities- Develop positive, supportive relationships with Upward Bound students and mentor them on academic, personal, social, and college/career concerns.
- Assist with creating and maintaining a safe, inclusive environment in the UB residence hall.
- Plan, lead, and participate in free‑time and structured activities during the residential week.
- Supervise participants during recreation, co‑curricular activities, and meals.
- Provide academic assistance either in groups or individually; help students with subject material, homework, and in‑class assignments.
- Monitor student arrival and dismissal.
- Maintain student confidentiality when appropriate.
- Handle or refer student disciplinary issues, crises, and personal matters to appropriate staff.
- Enforce program rules and expectations.
- Meet weekly with the UB Director to discuss participants’ progress and address concerns.
- Participate in a training workshop prior to the start of the summer component.
- Possess the ability to sit occasionally, walk up to a mile or more at times, and work indoors and outdoors in summer conditions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- College sophomore or higher, recent graduate, or graduate student with ability to tutor and mentor high‑school students in college‑preparatory math (through pre‑calculus), natural sciences, English, or foreign language.
- Minimum age 18.
- Background verification is required; standard level social background verification must be passed.
- Positive attitude, strong teamwork and leadership skills, and sensitivity toward diverse backgrounds.
- Experience working with low‑income and first‑generation students or prior residence‑assistant or camp‑counselor experience preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication; strong technology skills using database and spreadsheets.
- Ability to follow directions, complete projects with minimal supervision, prioritize tasks, multitask, meet deadlines, and analyze and resolve complex problems.
- Proficiency in modern office equipment, technology, and software.
- Professionalism and flexibility; ability to cope with stressful circumstances and interact cordially with people.
