Position Overview

Position Title: Asphalt Plant Mechanic

Position

Purpose:

An asphalt plant mechanic is an hourly‑rated skilled craft position that performs on construction projects any combination of the duties described below. It involves a wide variety of tasks, transferring from one task to another as workflow dictates.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Employee shall perform all duties and responsibilities with Solterra’s Core Values at the forefront.
  • Strong working knowledge of asphalt plant operation and electrical operation.
  • Read and comprehend repair manuals in their entirety.
  • Analyze malfunctions and repairs.
  • Operate and inspect plant to diagnose defects.
  • Dismantle and reassemble plant equipment using hoists and hand tools.
  • Weld broken parts and structural members.
  • Serve as a safety ambassador by complying with federal, state, and local laws, as well as company safety policy.
  • Foster a safety culture that promotes and enforces safe work practices.
  • Proactively identify and remedy job‑site hazards.
  • Examine parts for damage and excessive wear.
  • Test overhauled equipment to ensure efficient operation.
  • Direct and guide team members cleaning parts.
  • Direct and guide team members assisting with assembly and disassembly of asphalt plant belts and parts.
  • Perform incidental work items and duties included within other crafts.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Safety
  • Position is considered safety‑sensitive; subject to company drug and alcohol policy and OHSA regulations.
  • All employees must wear appropriate PPE.
  • Serve as a safety ambassador by complying with laws, enforcing safe work practices, and proactively identifying and remedying hazards.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Constant physical effort, including standing, during a regular shift of at least eight hours. Must stand for extended periods, stoop, bend, crouch as required.
  • Work often at heights up to 60 feet; requires climbing ladders, scaffolds, stair towers, narrow steps, passageways.
  • Frequently work with hands extended overhead, sometimes with hand power tools.
  • Lift and carry at least 50 pounds personally, up to 150 pounds with assistance.
  • Manual dexterity for hand‑carrying generators, lumber, materials, forms, power tools, hand tools.
  • Operate concrete vibrators for extended periods.
  • Physical dexterity to pour, grade, finish concrete, involving stretching, proper leg placement, repetitive arm/hand motions.
  • Maintain constant alertness to concurrent activities on construction site.
  • Walk on uneven surfaces, natural ground in varying weather.
  • May be certified to enter confined spaces; climb into excavations up to 15 feet, using ladders or crawling.
  • Operate a man‑lift safely and productively.
  • Maintain balance on plant or other surfaces. Work on project sites and operate vehicles, trailers, machinery, equipment, within local, state, and federal safety guidelines.
  • Must work outside, frequently for long periods in all weather, including extreme hot and cold temperatures.
  • Exposure to chemicals, vapors, pollutants, viruses, gases, uneven surfaces, loud noises, moving vehicles, machines, dust/debris.
Position Type / Expected Hours of Work
  • Full‑time position. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as duties demand.
  • Must be willing to travel to any and all jobsites without exception (including staying away from home if necessary).
Minimum Qualifications Education and Work Experience
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • 3 to 5+ years industry‑related experience required, emphasis on asphalt plant operations.
  • Must understand work directions and communicate effectively with supervisors and fellow employees.
  • This is not an entry‑level job; requires demonstrable previous experience as an asphalt plant mechanic.
  • Fluent in English (speak, read, write).
Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations
  • Valid driver’s license and clean motor‑vehicle record. CDL license preferred and may be required for some departments/divisions.
  • Passing pre‑employment drug and alcohol screening and background check required.
