Job Characteristics

Under the direction of a licensed occupational therapist, the COTA will help provide on-site occupational therapy services to eligible students to facilitate their ability to function in the educational setting. These services may include assessment, training and assistance with program development and implementation, data collection, consultation, accessing adaptive materials and attendance at IFSP/IEP meetings.

Job Characteristics

Under the direction of a licensed occupational therapist, the COTA will help provide on-site occupational therapy services to eligible students to facilitate their ability to function in the educational setting. These services may include assessment, training and assistance with program development and implementation, data collection, consultation, accessing adaptive materials and attendance at IFSP/IEP meetings.

Essential Functions

  • Assists occupational therapist with assessing students’ level of functioning and need for therapy.
  • Assists the occupational therapist in writing goals and in the development and implementation of occupational therapy programs.
  • Collects and records data on therapy programs.
  • Maintains on-going communication with the occupational therapist regarding student programs, status of therapy equipment and effectiveness of occupational therapy programs.
  • Assists occupational therapist in design, modification, construction and procurement of adaptive equipment.
  • Maintains regular schedule, attends required IFSP/IEP meetings, completes Medicaid billing forms, and writes progress notes.
  • Manages student behavior during therapy.
  • Makes home visits as necessary.
  • Respects confidential information.
  • Maintains regular attendance in order to preserve the continuity of service delivery for the program.

OAR .
  • Performs duties in a manner reasonably expected and generally recognized by the profession.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the occupational therapist, program administrator and superintendent.
Qualifications

  • Graduate of accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant Program.
  • Meets licensing requirements as set forth by the Occupational Therapy Licensing Board, State of Oregon.
  • Understands special education services.
  • Experience with children is desirable.
  • Ability to work harmoniously and communicate with other agencies, parents and staff members.
  • The ability to organize self and fulfill daily needs of the program.
  • Holds a valid Oregon driver's license, automobile insurance and provide own transportation.
  • Holds a current first aid card.
  • Ability to deal with staff, students, and the public in an effective manner and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Ability to respect confidential information.
Education

Graduate of accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant Program

Working Conditions

The employee may work in regular or special education settings and/or in community settings with students in small or large groups or 1-to-1 and may be required to travel on the job.

The employee may work beyond an eight-hour day or a five-day work week attending meetings, conferences, and school activities. The employee needs to be competent in conflict resolution. The employee must be able to communicate effectively in confrontational and emotional situations involving staff, students, parents and patrons. Confidentiality is a top priority for the person in this position.

The employee at times works under varied workloads and inflexible deadlines. Problems may arise which require immediate attention setting up conflicting priorities. Sound judgment is required to effectively prioritize these demands.
