Join Protein Works as our Data Engineer and own the Google Cloud data platform behind every decision we make, from ingestion and orchestration to security, governance and cost. That means data flowing in from marketing, trading, operations and finance, and a business that wants to use every bit of it. We're now rolling out safe, self-serve AI analytics across the company, and that only works if the platform underneath is clean, governed and reliable. That's where you come in. This is one of two engineering roles we're hiring into our Business Intelligence team.

As our GCP Data Engineer, you'll own the platform and everything that gets data into it; our Analytics Engineer will own what happens once it lands. It's a hands-on cloud data engineering role based at our Liverpool campus with hybrid working. The ownership is clear, and it's a small team building things properly. If you'd rather build the alert than be surprised by the failure, and you want your platform to be the reason the business trusts its numbers, you'll fit right in.

What You'll Do Own ingestion end to end, from scoping the brief to reliable pipelines landing data in Big Query from APIs, databases, files and third-party platforms. Own the Google Cloud data platform itself: projects, services, networking, access, and how everything runs across Cloud Run, Cloud Scheduler, Pub/Sub and our Dataform workflow triggers. Build the monitoring and alerting that means pipelines recover on their own and problems surface before anyone downstream notices.

Lead data governance and GDPR on GCP with our Data Protection Officer, covering IAM, policy tags, column-level security, authorised views and retention. Raise the engineering bar with CI/CD in Cloud Build, Terraform and Git Hub, separate development and production environments, and a sharp eye on performance and cost. Partner with Analytics Engineering and our analysts on data contracts and conventions, laying the foundations for trusted, self-serve AI analytics.

Ideal Candidate Proven data engineering experience on a cloud data warehouse, ideally the Google Cloud stack (Big Query, Cloud Run, Cloud Storage, Pub/Sub, Secret Manager), with production pipelines you can point to. Strong Python and SQL, plus hands-on experience integrating APIs and other sources into real production data flows. Infrastructure-as-code experience, ideally Terraform, and confidence running CI/CD with Cloud Build and Git Hub.

Sound judgement on orchestration: what should run when, what happens when a step fails, and who needs to know about it. You take a messy brief and turn it into a structured, working pipeline without it being handed to you step by step, and you own it once it's live. You hold a high bar for detail, documentation and communication, and you're always sharpening how you work, AI tooling included.

Dataform, dbt, streaming ingestion or Google's marketing stack are a bonus.
