General Description – Purpose of Role

The Machinist is responsible for operating machine tools to produce precision metal parts and components according to engineering specifications. They work with a variety of tools and equipment, such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, and computer‑controlled machines, to fabricate parts for use in manufacturing and production processes.

Essential Functions
  • Set up and operate machine tools to perform machining operations, such as turning, milling, drilling, grinding, and boring, to produce metal parts to required specifications
  • Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications to determine machining requirements, dimensions, tolerances, and surface finishes
  • Select appropriate cutting tools, fixtures, and materials for each job, and set up machines according to work instructions and safety guidelines
  • Inspect machined parts using precision measuring instruments, such as micrometers, calipers, and gauges, to ensure conformance to specifications and quality standards
  • Identify and troubleshoot issues with machine tools, tooling, or work pieces during the machining process, and make adjustments or repairs as needed to maintain quality and efficiency
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks on machine tools, including cleaning, lubrication, and minor repairs, to ensure optimal performance and longevity
  • Adhere to safety protocols and procedures at all times, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), following machine safety guidelines, and reporting safety hazards or concerns
  • Maintain accurate records of machining operations, including job setups, tooling changes, production counts, and quality inspection results, in accordance with company policies and procedures
Qualifications And Experience
  • Completion of a machining program or vocational training in machining techniques, CNC programming, blueprint reading, and precision measurement is highly beneficial. Some employers may require candidates to have completed a formal machining program or apprenticeship.
  • Candidates should have practical experience in machining operations, including operating manual and CNC machine tools such as lathes, mills, grinders, and drills. Experience with both conventional and computer‑controlled machining is valuable.
  • Experience reading and interpreting engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications to understand machining requirements, dimensions, tolerances, and surface finishes.
  • Proficiency in using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, depth gauges, and dial indicators to ensure accuracy and quality in machined parts.
  • Experience selecting appropriate cutting tools, fixtures, and materials for machining jobs, and setting up machines according to work instructions and safety guidelines.
  • Experience inspecting machined parts using precision measuring tools and techniques to verify conformance to specifications and quality standards. Familiarity with quality control processes and procedures is essential.
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues with machine tools, tooling, or work pieces during the machining process and make adjustments or repairs as needed to maintain quality and efficiency.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and procedures related to machining operations, including proper handling of equipment, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and adherence to safety guidelines.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Understanding of various types of machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, drills, and computer numerical control (CNC) machines. Knowledge of the capabilities, limitations, and applications of each type of machine tool.
  • Knowledge of different types of metals and materials commonly used in machining processes, including their properties, characteristics, and machining techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications to determine machining requirements, dimensions, tolerances, and surface finishes.
