    Job Summary

    This position protects life and property by performing fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, fire prevention, and public education activities, and other duties as assigned.

    Supervision Received

    Works under the direct supervision of a Captain, Lieutenant, or Acting Officer

    Essential Duties

    (Any one position may not include all of the tasks listed, nor do the examples necessarily include all of the tasks performed.)

    • Responds to alarms and participates in incident response including firefighting operations, operation of fire apparatus and other equipment as required; responds and participates in remediation activities of hazardous materials, and other related incidents; responds to emergency medical incidents and provides EMT – Basic services; responds and provides technical rescue services.
    • Writes reports accurately and in a timely manner, documenting incident data, patient assessment, and patient treatment.
    • Operates radio and other communications equipment.
    • Participates in the development of Quick Access Plans, hydrant maintenance, and other assigned duties or special projects.
    • Performs minor repairs as needed to apparatus and equipment.
    • Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of the stations, facilities, and equipment; cleans walls, floors, carpet, kitchen, restrooms, and all other parts of each station; cleans, washes, polishes, maintains, and tests fire apparatus and equipment.
    • Presents programs to the community on safety, medical, and fire prevention topics.
    • Participates in training exercises, attends classes in firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and related subjects.
    • Participates in physical fitness.
    • Maintains required certifications.
    • Maintains positive working relationships with the public, other departments, town staff and CLFR members.
    • Carries out duties in conformance with department policy.
    • Operates driving apparatus, operating pumps, and related equipment.
    Peripheral Duties
    • Interacts with, supports, and assists CLFR members as directed by the chain of command.
    • Assists in training new members as assigned.
    • Assume duties as Apparatus Engineer, as assigned.
    • Maintains knowledge and competency of current trends in the field.
    Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Working knowledge of:
      • Fire suppression and prevention principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment
      • Firefighting, rescue, and EMS techniques, practices, and standards
      • All department vehicles and equipment capabilities, as well as good working knowledge of vehicle and power tool mechanics and operation
      • NC State Laws pertaining to fire department operations and activity
      • The CLFR district and types of occupancies
    • Ability To:
      • Apply standard firefighting techniques to specific situations
      • Follow verbal and written instructions
      • Handle stressful situations
      • Communicate effectively, both verbally and written
      • Establish effective working relationships with members, other agencies, and the public
      • Handle all physical requirements of the job
      • Perform strenuous or peak physical efforts during emergency, non-emergency, and/or training activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold, and smoke.
      • Work effectively with other CLFR members, Officers, and the public.
