Position: Concrete Finisher / Paver

Job Summary

The concrete finisher/paver smooths and finishes surfaces of poured concrete, such as sidewalks, roads, and curbs using a variety of hand and power tools. Aligns forms for sidewalks, curbs, gutters, patch voids, and uses saws to cut expansion joints.

Essential Functions
  • Check the forms that hold the concrete to see that they are properly constructed.
  • Set the forms that hold concrete to the desired pitch, depth, and align them.
  • Spread, level, and smooth concrete using rake, shovel, hand or power trowel, hand or power screed, and float.
  • Mold expansion joints and edges, using edging tools, jointers, and straightedge.
  • Monitor how the wind, heat, or cold affect the curing of the concrete throughout the entire process.
  • Ensure compliance of all safety procedures and policies while promoting company’s safety culture.
  • Perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • At least 2 years’ experience in highway, bridge, sewer, and road construction.
Skills / Key Competencies
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in construction or repair of structures for highways, bridges, sewers, and roads.
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, geometry, etc.
  • Knowledge of machines, tools, designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgement when handling day to day information.
  • Excellent time-management skills to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks and responsibilities to meet deadlines and adjust to changing priorities.
  • Ability to work cooperatively across all levels delivering on commitments – results oriented.
  • Ability to complete work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet department targets and deadlines.
  • Ability to work non-routine hours, when necessary.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as required.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work outdoors, exposed to heat and humidity, cold and rain, and around heavy traffic areas.
  • Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
  • Ability to operate job related tools.
  • Constantly perform repeating motions that may include feet, leg, wrists, hands and/or fingers.
  • Work that includes moving and/or lifting objects up to 50 pounds, carry at least 30 pounds and up to 150 pounds with help.
  • Ability to frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions.
