TERM INSTRUCTOR - ENGLISH POOL at Del Mar College - Corporate Services
Job SummaryTeach five (5) English courses per regular semester, which may include online, dual‑credit, or early college classes. Evaluate student progress, assign grades, and provide academic advisement. Develop and assess curriculum, research instructional materials, and maintain a supportive learning environment. Participate in department and college committees, pursue professional development, and perform related faculty duties.
Responsibilities- Teach five (5) courses per semester, including online and dual‑credit options.
- Evaluate students’ progress, assign grades, and conduct conferences.
- Plan and assess English curriculum and instructional effectiveness.
- Research and select appropriate textbooks and instructional materials.
- Offer academic advisement and hold regular office hours (at least one hour daily).
- Assist with marketing the program and recruiting students.
- Serve on departmental and college committees.
- Participate in continuing education and professional development activities.
- Maintain a classroom environment that promotes teaching and learning.
- Use diverse teaching methods to accommodate varied learning styles.
- Teach assigned courses at varied times and locations per institutional needs.
- Provide a written, accessible syllabus following Course Syllabus Guidelines.
- Assess student learning outcomes and revise assessments to improve program quality.
- Maintain professional relationships with students, colleagues, and the community.
- Conduct self‑evaluation and set personal/goals in consultation with the department chair.
- Accept special assignments and serve on committees as required.
- Plan course instruction based on approved syllabi outlining objectives.
- Employ a variety of teaching styles to accommodate diverse learning styles.
- Demonstrate successful college‑level teaching experience.
- Utilize instructional technologies, including computers, internet resources, and media.
Master’s degree with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in English.
Preferred Qualifications- Knowledge of current writing theory and practice, especially developmental English.
- Qualified to teach developmental English and Reading (Bachelor’s in English, English education, or related fields; 1 year of full‑time middle or secondary school teaching; or 30 semester credit hours of external teaching).
- Experience teaching college‑level online courses and/or documented success in a college LMS (e.g., Blackboard, Canvas).
