This recruitment will be used to fill two (2) part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Research Technician for the Department of Forest Engineering, Resources, and Management at Oregon State University (OSU). We are seeking two forestry research technicians for a research project investigating the impacts of wildfire on managed, multi-aged Douglas‑fir stands in western Oregon. These hires will collect data to help improve our understanding of how forest structure and management history impact wildfire effects and forest resilience in Douglas‑fir/western hemlock forests of the western Cascades.

Work will be conducted in field setting on the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest near Blue River, OR. Housing will be provided on the Experimental Forest.

• Conducting basic forest inventory measurements (e.g., measuring tree diameters, heights, and canopy cover) on an established plot network.
• Collecting data to assess fire effects (e.g., tree mortality, crown scorch, and bark char).
• Maintenance of field mensuration equipment and field plot monumentation.
• Transcribing data from field forms into electronic records.
• Use of GPS units, mapping apps, and map and compass navigation to locate established plots.
• Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study.
• Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment.
• Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
  • High School student:
    Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home‑schooling program.
  • Undergraduate and post‑baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term.
  • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term.
  • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term.
  • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term.

* International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full‑time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

• Be pursuing a degree in forestry, natural resources management, botany, environmental sciences, or a related field.
• Have experience or education related to the identification of woody plants and the use of plant identification keys.
• Possess a valid driver’s license.
• Be physically capable of traveling over uneven terrain.
• Be physically capable of lifting up to 25 pounds.

• Prior experience working in forested settings in mountainous terrain.
• Prior experience with forest or vegetation inventory in the Pacific Northwest.
• Coursework in forest ecology, fire ecology, or forest biology.

Candidates will be expected to follow written protocols and oral directions. Candidates will be expected to work as a team to perform tasks that have been outlined in written directions or previously demonstrated by a supervisor. Candidates may be asked to work independently on tasks…
