Position Summary

This recruitment will fill up to ten part‑time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Student Technical Research Assistant positions in the Sensory Science Lab in the Department of Food Science and Technology (FST) at Oregon State University (OSU). Work will be composed of assisting the consumer studies and/or assisting undergraduate level basic research (human psychophysics lab).

Position Duties
  • 90% of responsibilities to assist with operations in the consumer testing lab and/or in the human psychophysics lab.
  • 10% of responsibilities will include laboratory organization/design, where needed, to increase the laboratory’s efficiency and professional appearance.
  • Help set‑up and run consumer studies (scheduling panelists, preparing food samples, serving samples during testing days, general cleaning).
  • Basic graphing.
  • Data analysis.
  • Assist with writing a study protocol(s).
  • Preparation of samples.
  • Making basic graphs.
  • Cleaning lab glassware and testing equipment.
Required Qualifications
  • Strong interest in Sensory Science and willingness to learn and develop relevant skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Comfortable working with computers and technology in general.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral English.
  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study.
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible.
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard:
    • High School student:
      Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home‑schooling program.
    • Undergraduate and post‑baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term.
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*.
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term.
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*.

* International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full‑time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Be an active student in the Food Science and Technology (FST) or related (e.g., nutrition, chemistry) programs at OSU.
  • Available in the summer.
  • OLCC Server’s License.
  • Work study eligible preferred (listed on financial aid award letter).
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • Anticipated 10 hours per week.
  • May include evening and weekend hours.
  • May require walking, standing, bending and stooping for extended periods.
