Position: Diversity Learning Assistant 2026-2027

Position Summary

This recruitment will fill five (5) part‑time Diversity Learning Assistant positions (max 24 hrs/week) for University Housing & Dining Services at Oregon State University. DLAs serve as campus ambassadors, developing inclusive communities and leading social‑justice education through workshops, bulletin boards, and events.

Position Duties
  • I. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
    • Develop and maintain positive relationships with all residents and staff, including:
    • Creating and maintaining a strong presence in your hall community.
    • Attending DLA staff and hall staff meetings.
    • Conducting community outreach to connect residents with campus resources and foster communication among underserved populations.
    • Serve as a liaison for UHDS to cultivate relationships with campus partners engaged in diversity and social justice education.
    • Actively work toward creating an inclusive community where all students feel safe to be themselves.
    • Be accessible during evening hours unless special arrangements are made with the DIP Coordinator and live‑in professional staff.
  • II. PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT & EXECUTION
    • Collaborate with the DIP Coordinator to develop, execute, and assess diversity and social justice educational programs in residence halls, including:
    • Promoting programs and events through posters and word of mouth.
    • Planning and preparing educational programs, desks, and intentional interactions.
    • Collecting data at programs and socials.
  • III. ADMINISTRATION & BUILDING OPERATIONS
    • Meet regularly with the DIP Coordinator and live‑in professional staff.
    • Attend weekly DLA and building staff meetings (typically Tuesday nights, 4:30 PM‑9:00 PM).
    • Meet regularly with fellow DLAs for event preparation.
    • Develop and execute bulletin boards and similar ongoing programs with the DIP Coordinator.
    • Use Microsoft Teams, email, phone, in‑person, and written communication as needed; check all points of communication at least once daily.
    • Participate in building opening/closing procedures and seasonal transitions.
    • Staff front‑desk operations once a week from 8 PM‑11 PM (Sunday‑Thursday).
    • Complete other administrative duties outlined by the DIP Coordinator.
  • IV. DEPARTMENTAL SUPPORT
    • Assist with recruitment and selection of new staff members throughout the academic year.
    • Participate in UHDS and DIP events as required.
  • V. TRAINING & ON‑GOING DEVELOPMENT
    • Participate in spring training and staff orientation activities, including periodic meetings with new and returning staff and various training sessions.
    • Participate in fall training and staff orientation activities, such as UHDS Residential Education training and DLA‑specific training.
    • Actively participate in all UHDS Residential Education and DIP training throughout the academic year.
  • VI. POLICY EXPECTATIONS
    • Understand and support the guidelines in the UHDS Policy Guide and Student Conduct Code.
    • Support and adhere to UHDS policies on Sexual Misconduct Response, Consensual Relationships, Computer/Network Acceptable Use, and Staff Assessment Process.
  • Qualifications
    • UHS & DIP are the primary employer; other employment requires prior approval.
    • Full‑time OSU or partnership student with a GPA of 2.50 or higher (or 2.0 for most recent term).
    • Good academic and conduct standing with OSU & UHDS.
    • Successful completion of a Criminal History Check.
    • Demonstrated understanding of social justice and diversity.
    • Ability to cultivate relationships and lead conversations around diversity.
    • Strong administrative skills, including time management and prioritization.
    • Commitment to diversity and social justice education and initiatives.
    Preferred (Special) Qualifications
    • Same academic and conduct standing as above.
    • Additional experience in leadership or program development related to diversity.
    • Experience in community outreach or resident advisor roles.
    Working Conditions / Work Schedule
    • Primarily indoor residence‑hall environments; often night and weekend hours.
    • May lift up to 10 lbs regularly, occasionally up to 70 lbs.
