Job Description & How to Apply Below

MSS, Inc is a land surveying, civil engineering, structural engineering, and land use planning firm based in the heart of the Willamette Valley, Corvallis, OR. We are a small business serving our customers for over 50 years and we enjoy long-lasting relationships with many of our customers and partners.

We are seeking an experienced Structural Engineer to join our team and contribute to diverse building projects across the Pacific Northwest.

Opportunity

MSS is looking for someone who wants to help build a structural engineering practice. If you've considered launching out on your own, but not sure you want the risk of starting your own business, then this is a perfect opportunity for you. As the structural engineering lead, you'll have significant autonomy and ownership over structural projects under the mentorship of the principal while collaborating with our experienced civil engineering, surveying, and planning teams.

You'll work on a diverse mix of projects—from residential and commercial wood frame structures to steel, concrete, and masonry buildings. Your expertise will directly influence the success of our projects and the satisfaction of our clients. As we continue to grow, you'll have the opportunity to help hire and mentor additional structural staff, building the structural department from the ground up according to your vision and our firm's values.

Future ownership opportunity is possible for someone who delivers business growth and demonstrates business and technical leadership.

What You'll Do

As our structural engineering lead, you'll work directly with the principal and operate with significant independence on projects. You'll be responsible for the design and analysis of building structures across multiple construction types, collaborating with our civil engineers, surveyors, and planners to deliver efficient, cost-effective structural solutions. You'll manage projects from concept through construction, develop and maintain strong client relationships, and have opportunities to contribute to business development initiatives that grow our structural practice.

Our

Philosophy
  • Excellence through CANEI (Constant and Never-Ending Improvement)
  • Loving our team and valuing relationships

  • Building better communities through our work
  • Drive, daring, and possibility in everything we do

We celebrate both our successes and failures, knowing we learn from each experience. We value individual strengths and find success in our diversity. As a smaller firm with a flat organizational structure, you'll have direct access to leadership, more autonomy, and a real sense of ownership in our company's success.

  • Minimum 6 years of experience in structural design of wood frame construction
  • Working knowledge of steel, concrete, and masonry design
  • Proficiency in REVIT and AutoCAD
  • Experience with structural analysis software (RISA, RAM Elements, or similar platforms)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage client relationships and projects independently
  • Strong understanding of applicable building codes and standards (IBC, ASCE 7, NDS, ACI, AISC)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with mass timber design and construction
  • Proven track record in business development and client acquisition
  • Interest in building and leading a structural engineering team as the firm grows
  • Experience establishing technical standards, procedures, or quality control processes
  • Leadership experience or demonstrated ability to mentor and develop engineering talent
