THIS IS AN UNPAID VOLUNTEER POSITION. This recruitment may be used to fill multiple vacancies and/or establish a pool of qualified candidates for future vacancies.

This position performs law enforcement and crime prevention activities relating to federal, state, and local traffic and criminal laws and ordinances. Arrests and books suspects; transports prisoners; investigates crimes and criminal complaints; provides field service of civil process; and prepares necessary reports. Performs other work as required.

Essential Functions
  • Patrol county roads, businesses and residential areas to enforce traffic and criminal laws; issue warnings or citations; make security checks.
  • Respond to calls including major crimes, property crimes, assaults, domestic disturbances and assaults, runaway juveniles, trespasses, and harassment and take appropriate action.
  • Investigate crimes and criminal complaints, which involve securing the crime scene, interviewing victims, witnesses and suspects, collecting evidence, and assisting with follow-up investigation work.
  • Investigate traffic accidents, which include checking for injured persons, administering first aid, controlling the accident scene, measuring and diagramming the accident scene, and interviewing participants and witnesses.
  • Make arrests as necessary; book prisoners; handle suspects and prisoners in accordance with established procedures; and transport prisoners.
  • Appear as a witness in court; provide security in the courtrooms; escort prisoners to and from court. Maintain accurate written records of activities and prepare reports as necessary.
  • Assist with crime prevention activities, which include surveillance patrols and dissemination of information to the public; inform the public and answer inquiries regarding directions, laws, ordinances, civil procedures or cases on file, complaint procedures and provide other general assistance as required.
  • Develop and maintain proficiency in the use of a variety of equipment associated with law enforcement duties including firearms, police radio and communication codes, vehicles, breathalyzers, crime scene kits, fingerprinting equipment and radar.
  • Serve civil process including such documents as summons and complaints, orders, citations, petitions, subpoenas, various writs; serve and enforce eviction notices.
  • May conduct research in order to determine the location of the persons named in civil documents received for service; provide forwarding information if recipient has moved from county.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • 21 years of age at time of hire.
  • Must possess a valid Oregon driver's license with a good driving record as driving is a requirement of this position. DMV driving history will be checked.
  • Have no adult felony convictions or major misdemeanors as defined by Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) that would bar certification, (list available from DPSST).
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within 6 months of appointment, a first-aid and CPR certifications.
  • Must successfully pass the written POST (Police Officer Selection Test) by a minimum of 70% overall. Test is no cost to you and consists of Math, Reading, Grammar and Writing.
Successful candidates will be required to pass a background investigation, psychological exam, and medical evaluation before being hired.

Additional Information
  • All uniforms, protective equipment and weapons are agency provided.
  • If you successfully pass the written test, there is a $200 background investigation deposit which is returned to you upon successful advancement to Level II status.
