Position Summary

This recruitment will fill two part-time student technical assistant positions for the Horticulture Department at Oregon State University. The role offers a chance to assist with weed science research focused on weed management in grass seed production systems. Technicians will conduct field and laboratory experiments, collect research data, and work independently or alongside USDA-ARS researchers.

Hands‑on experience will be provided for all tasks; no previous experience required. The position is located at the Hyslop Research Farm, 3455 NE Granger Ave, Corvallis, OR (≈8 mi from campus). Applicants must have transportation to the farm. Work hours are 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

Position Duties

Tasks include a mix of indoor and outdoor activities related to weed science research.

Outdoor work examples:

  • Irrigation management
  • Hand weeding trials
  • Collecting plant and seed samples

Indoor work examples:

  • Cleaning and counting seeds
  • Taking plant data
  • Processing samples
  • Assisting researchers with experiments and data entry

Enrollment requirements:

  • High school student: regular enrollment in high school or home‑schooling program
  • Undergraduate/post‑baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
  • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
  • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
  • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

* International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above. Reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS) and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Required Qualifications
  • Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions (cool/rainy winter; hot, dry, dusty summer)
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and walk/kneel for extended periods
  • Follows instructions; works independently or in a team
  • Must be an Oregon State University student, hold a valid driver’s license, and have transportation to the Hyslop Research Farm
Preferred (Special) Qualifications

Interest in plants, horticulture, or crop science and curiosity about research experiments.
