Position: Library Media Technician (IN-HOUSE ONLY) (Evening)

About the Position

Location: Orange Coast College – in‑person, on‑campus position.
Employment type: permanent, classified, full‑time (12 months), for internal Coast Community College District (CCCD) employees only; external candidates are not eligible.

Hours: Monday through Thursday 11:00 am–8:00 pm and Saturday 8:00 am–5:00 pm, with occasional extended hours and weekends as needed.
Salary: EE‑114 + 2.5% weekend–partial shift differential (salary schedule).

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and perform circulation services; schedule, train, and supervise student employees on the circulation desk.
  • Provide assistance to students, staff, and the public – answer questions, give instruction on library resources, and process material and fee transactions.
  • Conduct walk‑and‑talk orientations for student‑patrons on library use, periodicals, bibliographic search, internet search, and electronic media.
  • Process student Cal‑West interlibrary loan requests; search, transfer, and return requested materials.
  • Maintain records for requests, receipts, returns, lost or overdue items, fines, and transcript holds.
  • Mend and repair books and non‑book materials; dispose of damaged or outdated items per policy and state law.
  • Coordinate annual physical inventory of all library materials.
  • Oversee and maintain the computer lab, ensuring hardware, software, and printers are functional and collaborating with IT for updates and repairs.
  • Troubleshoot printer and computer problems, working with IT as needed.
  • Manage the Paper Cut system and cash handling; reconcile and deposit cash with the Bursar’s Office.
  • Schedule and maintain media rooms and their technology, collaborating with IT when necessary.
  • Assist students with computer issues and training in the computer lab.
  • Hire, train, and supervise new employees in circulation and media areas.
  • Update and ensure accuracy of departmental policy and procedure manuals for circulation.
  • Collect and report data for annual statistics reports.
  • Communicate library policies, hours, website updates, and sign postings.
  • Use the foundation budget to select and purchase reserve textbooks, justifying expenses against invoices.
  • Manage cash in register with daily reconciliation; store cash in a safe until Bursar deposit.
  • Open and close the building for daily activities.
  • Maintain reports of cataloged items and cataloging activity statistics.
  • Run and process reports of long‑overdue items for collection development.
  • Search and download bibliographic descriptions of materials for the library catalog.
  • Maintain data accuracy on book and material descriptions; resolve errors in bibliographic records.
  • Update subject and name authority headings in the online catalog as notified.
  • Participate in statewide meetings on new technology and library software.
  • Collect and report statistics on departmental activities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the position’s objectives.
  • Abide by all District policies and procedures, including Board Policy 3050 (Code of Professional Ethics).
  • Qualifications
    • In‑depth procedural knowledge of library methods, practices, and terminology.
    • Understanding of Library of Congress classification and ALA rules for cataloging.
    • Basic knowledge of machine‑readable classification and coding.
    • Working knowledge of automated library systems and record management.
    • Comprehensive understanding of library operations, goals, and objectives.
    • Human‐relations skills to convey concepts to students and resolve urgent needs.
    • Arithmetic skills for arranging materials and calculating sums.
    • Writing skills to document instructions on library service use.
    Abilities
    • Capacity to perform the essential responsibilities and functions of the position.
    • Ability to follow detailed procedures such as standard cataloging and filing rules.
    • Organizational skills to maintain a well‑organized library setting.
    • Ability to apply and explain library services, layout, rules, and policies.
