Position: Library Media Technician (IN-HOUSE ONLY) (Evening)
About the Role
This classified employee position is a Library Media Technician in the Library & Learning Support Division, part of the Office of Instruction at Orange Coast College.
IN‑HOUSE ONLY:
This position is open to internal permanent and temporary employees of the Coast Community College District; external candidates are not eligible. Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. and the district is not sponsoring visas.
The role provides paraprofessional library services, including scheduling, training, and overseeing student employees; direct assistance to patrons; processing fines; operating library systems such as Alma and OCLC; cataloging; managing the computer lab and printing services; and other duties assigned by the Public Services Librarian.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Coordinates and performs circulation services; communicates library procedures and practices in public, library, and reserve policies; schedules circulation staff as needed.Assists students, staff, and the public with library use, internal and external resources, and material location; provides computer instruction; processes library material and fee transactions.Conducts walk‑and‑talk orientations for student patrons on library use, periodicals, bibliographic search, internet search, or electronic media.Processes student Cal‑West consortium inter‑library loan requests; searches and transfers requested materials.Maintains records for requests, receipts, and returns; manages lost and overdue books and fines; handles transcript holds based on student account balances.Mends and repairs book and non‑book materials; disposes of damaged or outdated materials per procedures, board policy, and state law.Conducts and coordinates annual physical inventory of all library materials.Oversees computer lab, maintaining computers and printers; ensures software is current; collaborates with IT for updates and repairs.Troubleshoots printers and computers, both software and hardware problems, and collaborates with IT for updates and repairs.Oversees the Paper Cut system and hardware; resolves student printing problems; manages cash handling and prepares cash for deposit to the Bursar’s Office; collaborates with IT and Bursar’s Office for repairs.Manages scheduling and maintenance of media rooms and the technology inside them; collaborates with IT for updates and repairs.Assists students with computer issues, questions, and training in the computer lab.Hires and trains new employees in circulation and media areas.Updates and ensures accuracy of department policies and procedural manuals for circulation.Collects and reports data for annual statistics reports.Communicates library policies and hours; updates website and displays signs as needed.Selects, purchases, and justifies textbooks for the reserve collection using the foundation budget.Manages cash in register, daily reconciliation to software ledger; stores cash safely until deposit with the Bursar.Opens and/or closes the building for daily activities.Maintains reports of items cataloged and cataloging activity statistics for internal use and annual surveys.Runs and processes reports of long overdue items for collection development; decides on re‑purchase or deletion from the collection.Searches and downloads bibliographic descriptions of materials for the catalog according to policy and national standards.Maintains data accuracy of book and material descriptions in the online catalog; resolves errors and conflicts on bibliographic records.Receives, reviews, and updates subject and name authority headings in the online catalog when notified by vendors.Participates in statewide meetings on new technology and practices concerning library software.Collects and reports statistics on departmental activities.Performs other related duties assigned that support the objective of the position.Abides by all District policies and procedures including Board Policy 3050 – Code of Professional Ethics.Qualifications
