South Coast Repertory’s (SCR) is seeking a digital first and print Graphic Designer to create materials that support marketing, communications, education, development and audience engagement efforts in accordance with institutional standards for design style and consistency.
The Graphic Designer is part of a creative team which also includes the Creative Director, Assistant Director of Marketing, Video & Social Media Manager, Website & Publications Manager, Marketing Coordinator, Marketing & Communications Director and project supervisors from the Development and Education departments. The Graphic Designer supports SCR’s mission, strategic goals, and Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging core values through their commitment to ensuring all company graphics reflect SCR’s artistic goals and are attentive to cultural sensitivities and detail accuracy.
ABOUTTHE ROLE Design & Brand Maintenance
- Provide print and digital graphic design services, ensuring consistency and quality of the theatre’s image, production values and all aspects of SCR’s visual messaging. Projects include social media, illustration, brochures, direct mail pieces, invitations, email, animations, ads, key art and title treatments, among others.
- Play an active role in the department's creative team, by contributing ideas, engaging in brainstorming sessions and collaborating in the development of strategy to inform the overall marketing campaign.
- Serve as the lead graphic designer for fundraising campaigns, the annual gala and other projects initiated by the Development Department.
- Serve as the lead graphic designer for Conservatory marketing campaigns and programs.
- Participate in the brainstorming and creation of audience engagement activities and displays.
- Support the Creative Director in the company’s overall graphic design workload.
- Review messaging and graphic strategy, parameters, copy and budget for each new project with the Creative Director, Assistant Director of Marketing and pertinent members of the marketing team.
- Traffic projects throughout the process from conception to final delivery, meeting established deadlines, maintaining budgets, monitoring schedules and balancing workload. Position ensures that deadlines are met, graphic continuity is achieved and quality is maintained. Attends press checks when necessary (may require some work outside regular business hours).
- Develop and maintain relationships with vendors—printers, sign makers, etc. Secure print and service bids and placing orders as needed. Obtain the best possible product for the best cost, while maintaining a high standard of quality.
- Maintain digital filing systems for graphics projects. Ordering graphics supplies and tools. Contribute to the maintenance of the printed graphics archives.
- Provide event and production photography and videography support as needed.
- Participate in audience engagement efforts as needed, including but not limited to research, outreach, events and special promotions.
- Provide support to the Digital Media & Publications Manager and Social Media & Video Manager.
Qualities and skills that best serve a Graphic Designer may be:
- Excels at digital first (AI experience a plus), graphic design, illustration, typography, with strong sense of color and photography
- Minimum 4 years’ work experience in graphic arts
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite;
Familiarity with video editing software a plus - Strong organizational, interpersonal and communications skills, flexibility, sense of humor, and collaborative spirit, along with the ability to work under pressure and achieve deadlines
