The Tax Manager, Core Tax Services advises clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluates and selects alternative actions to lessen tax burden and compliance costs, identifies methods of complying with tax regulations, and acts as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. The Manager applies knowledge to understand potential tax issues, identifies and communicates potential risks and possible changes in tax policy, and engages in marketing, networking, and business development within their area of expertise.
The Manager may also provide written tax advice to clients.
- Tax Compliance
- Ensure clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and ensure self and client service teams comply with BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM).
- Conduct top-level review of tax returns and resolve all tax issues with client; involve specialists when appropriate.
- Communicate with client and Assurance any issues identified in tax accrual reviews.
- Plan and review the tax process and procedures, including budgeting, staffing, monitoring engagement process and time billed vs. budget, timely billing, managing out-of-scope activity, collection of accounts receivable.
- Manage client relationships and expectations for each project.
- Provide timely advice to clients.
- Research
- Identify when research is needed, frame issues clearly and concisely, and report analysis.
- Apply firm and professional standards for preparation of tax returns and WTA.
- Involve firm specialists as appropriate.
- ASC 740 (FAS 109 & FIN 48) Tax Accruals
- Apply and proactively enforce firm policies and TQM regarding ASC 740, FAS 109 and FIN 48.
- Explain and discuss components of the income tax provision and uncertain tax positions to client and other parties.
- Communicate with Assurance to plan tax accrual reviews, including budget, scope and delivery dates.
- Utilize and manage STS as needed.
- Tax Consulting
- Assist with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient methods to maximize client benefits and reduce current and future taxes.
- Consider applicability of CTS and STS consulting specialties for each client.
- Develop and implement a work plan for STS assistance on ongoing projects.
- Serve as a technical resource.
- Ensure client service teams comply with firm policy regarding WTA and exam support.
- Frame projects and issues for delegation to seniors and associates.
- Tax Specialization
- Develop in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues in one or more taxation areas (individual, corporate, property, sales, pass‑through, state and local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, compensation and benefits, accounting methods, R&D tax benefits).
- Possibly organize and conduct internal CPE training in the specialization area.
- Strategy Development
- Introduce and develop new or improved ideas to improve client, firm, or personnel positions proactively.
- Review studies of tax implications and offer alternative courses of action.
- Identify lessons learned and provide input to improve processes.
- Other duties as required
- Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervise associates and senior associates on all projects.
- Review work and provide comments.
- Train associates and seniors on software tools.
- Act as career advisor.
- Schedule and manage workload.
- Provide verbal and written performance feedback.
Skills and Abilities
- Bachelor's degree (required); major in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics preferred.
- Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation (preferred).
- Five plus years of prior relevant tax experience (public accounting, private industry, or consulting/professional services) (required).
- Prior supervisory experience (required).
- Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties (preferred).
- CPA, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or IRS Enrolled Agent (EA) (or equivalent) — required.
- Possession of other relevant professional degrees or certifications (preferred).
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (preferred).
