Summary

Registered Nurse - Jail – Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office, Jail Division. The position is full‑time, working 11 am–11 pm with shift differential. The role is centered on providing high‑quality nursing care to inmates in an institutional setting.

• Deliver direct nursing care to inmates, applying the nursing process—including health assessments, histories, physicals, and treatment plans.
• Carry out physician, dentist, and psychiatrist verbal and written orders, document all care in the state health record system, and administer medications per medication administration record.
• Perform venipuncture, IV therapy, and collection of specimens as ordered.
• Respond to and initiate care during medical and staff emergencies, including continuous CPR if required.
• Provide patient education and maintain confidentiality of inmate health information.
• Assist in hospital examinations, support physicians during inmate assessments, and participate in team meetings for problem solving and policy updates.
• Maintain clinical areas in a clean and safe condition, adhere to universal precautions, and participate in emergency preparedness drills.
• Follow all jail security and medication‑control policies, report safety concerns, and complete required injury/accident reports.
• Support on‑call duty and be available for varied shifts, holidays, or weekends as assigned.

• Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with current registration as a Registered Nurse in Iowa or a compact state.
• Current CPR certification, with ongoing training and board continuing education.
• Background check, employment physical including drug screen, and passage of initial and annual training.
• Strong communication in English, quick decision‑making, and ability to work independently in a high‑pressure, sometimes hostile environment.
• Experience with Microsoft Office and standard office equipment; knowledge of inmate rights and correctional nursing principles is essential.
