We Invite Applications For The Temporary Position Of
  • 1.0 FTE Indigenous Student Success Teacher

The Comox Valley School District, in partnership with the Indigenous Education Council (IEC), is seeking a passionate and dedicated Indigenous Student Success Teacher to support Indigenous learners (First Nations, Inuit, and Métis) in achieving academic success and high school completion. This role is funded through Targeted Enhancement Funding provided by the Ministry of Education and Child Care, and is focused on enhancing Indigenous Education programs and services—not replacing any existing programs such as Inclusive Education, Careers, or Counsellors.

Focus Areas & Responsibilities
  • Relationships and Mentoring
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with Indigenous students through regular check‑ins and mentorship.
  • Monitor student attendance, behavior, academic performance, and graduation progress.
  • Create a safe and welcoming space within the school for students to access support.
  • Facilitate social and learning activities that foster connection and belonging.
  • Engage families and community members in school activities to support student success.
  • Academic Support
  • Provide individualized academic support and monitor student progress.
  • Collaborate with teachers and school staff to ensure culturally responsive education.
  • Utilize systems to track academic data and report regularly to the Indigenous Education Department.
  • Coordinate transitions and orientation for new students.
  • Attend support meetings involving Indigenous students.
  • Cultural Engagement
  • Collaborate with district staff supporting cultural activities such as Big House experiences, land‑based learning, etc.
  • Promote Indigenous pride and visibility within the school community.
  • Foster a sense of belonging and cultural identity among Indigenous students.
  • Parental Engagement
  • Maintain regular communication with parents / guardians through calls, emails, and meetings.
  • Encourage parent / guardian involvement through events such as gatherings, etc.
  • Conduct home visits as needed and collaborate with Indigenous Education Advocates to strengthen family‑school relationships.
  • Career Counselling and Planning
  • Support students in identifying post-secondary and career goals.
  • Assist with course selection, scholarship applications, and post-secondary planning.
  • Provide access to job fairs, career information sessions, and post-graduation pathways.
  • Collaborate with school counsellors to ensure comprehensive career support.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous youth and communities.
  • Strong understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and educational challenges.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Knowledge of and respect for local protocols.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, families, educators, and community partners.
  • Knowledge of academic tracking systems and student support strategies.
  • Indigenous Ancestry Required.
  • Valid BC Teaching Certificate Required
