Position: Instructor, Indigenous Leadership Certificate (ABG 100)

Position Summary

North Island College is seeking a qualified instructor to teach ABG 100:
Histories and Impacts of Colonization
as part of the Pathways to Nuu-chah-nulth Teacher Training Program
, a community‑led partnership with the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council and North Island College. The program supports Indigenous learners, with priority for Nuu‑chah‑nulth members in the region, who are preparing to become teachers grounded in Nuu‑chah‑nulth values, land, language, culture, and community. Students complete university‑level courses toward admission into Year 3 of the Bachelor of Education program.

ABG 100 explores historical relationships, colonial contexts, and social, economic, and political influences that have impacted Indigenous peoples and communities. The course includes pre‑contact ways of knowing, local teachings, Terra Nullius, the Doctrine of Discovery, treaties, the Indian Act, residential schools, other assimilation policies, and Indigenous response, resistance, and renewal.

Responsibilities
  • Instructional duties
    • Plan and prepare learning materials for instructional environments.
    • Use a variety of approaches and materials to address different learning needs.
    • Teach assigned subject areas and include all required subject matter or skill activities in courses and course outlines.
    • Direct student learning in a positive, supportive, and caring environment.
    • Be available to students regularly during office hours and classroom hours.
    • Clearly communicate learning outcomes for programs and courses, and explain how learners will be evaluated.
    • Design and conduct evaluations or appraisals of students, keeping them informed of progress.
    • Submit grades in a timely manner, in accordance with faculty policies.
    • Maintain records of student enrollment and achievement and other records required by the College and affiliated agencies.
  • Typical professional duties of instructional faculty
    • Work within College educational policies and contribute to the development of strategic plans.
    • Advise the Department Chair on inventory needs for books, supplies, and equipment.
    • Advise on enrollment management (recruitment and retention) strategies.
    • Report health and safety concerns and assist in rectifying them.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of computer applications appropriate to the teaching environment.
    • Maintain continuous professional development of competencies and qualifications.
    • Participate actively as a contributing member of the College community on committees and other activities.
    • Attend department meetings and other department activities during normal working hours.
    • Undertake other related responsibilities and duties assigned by the College when course load permits.

Required Education & Experience
  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Three years demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities and organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience working respectfully in or with Indigenous communities, including an understanding of protocols, relationship‑based practice, cultural safety, and trauma‑informed approaches.
  • Ability to connect academic course content to Indigenous lived experience, community priorities, and land, culture, language, and ways of knowing.
  • Preference will be given to qualified instructors with Indigenous ancestry.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to demonstrate effective team behaviours and support cooperative working relationships.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent instructional abilities, using creative and motivating approaches to stimulate learning.
  • Excellent organizational and time‑management skills, with the ability to plan, prioritize, and efficiently meet deadlines.
  • Basic proficiency with MS Office software applications, the internet, and web‑based applications.
  • Knowledge of Nuu‑chah‑nulth communities, histories, governance, language, protocols, and teachings.
  • Experience delivering education in‑community or in partnership with First Nations, Tribal Councils, Indigenous organizations, or Indigenous education programs.
  • Experience incorporating Indigenous pedagogies, land‑based learning, Elder teachings, storytelling, reflection, and community‑based learning into course delivery.
