Overview
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Infection Preventionist (IP) is responsible for the Center’s Infection Prevention and Control Program and functions as a practitioner, resource, consultant, educator and facilitator for staff in multiple locations, focusing on infection prevention and control activities at the center level, outcome and process surveillance (including identifying, investigating, analyzing, controlling and reporting infections), outbreak management, and employee health.
- Supports Welcoming program/general orientation by providing infection prevention and control training for newly hired employees.
- Reviews immunization documentation/status for new hires to ensure compliance at hire.
- Ensures necessary TB screening and documentation is completed per regulatory requirements.
- Ensures Hepatitis B vaccination is offered and initiated or declination signed within regulatory requirements.
- Develops and implements education programs in response to identified infection control needs identified through QAPI, rounding, center quality measures, or other means.
- Teaches staff current accepted patient care and center practices as they relate to infection prevention and control.
- Performs rounds on units to:
- Review and monitor infection prevention and control issues.
- Monitor/observe practices to identify educational needs.
- Identify environmental issues contributing to the spread of infectious diseases and report findings for follow up.
- Evaluate compliance with Standard and Transmission-based Precautions and educate as needed.
- Develops, implements, monitors, and maintains the IPCP for the center with goals related to quality of care, prevention of infections and communicable diseases, and minimizing outbreak risk.
- Completes surveillance and tracking: maintains records per policy and regulatory requirements; analyzes trends and presents findings; develops plans with Center QAPI.
- Facilitates Infection Control Risk Assessment of the Center’s patient population and center.
- Integrates IPCP with the Center’s QAPI processes; participates in all QAPI committees and reports IPCP status.
- Oversees influenza and pneumococcal vaccination programs for patients/residents.
- Supports the antimicrobial stewardship program, including antibiotic use and prescribing protocols, and monitoring systems.
- Directs implementation and annual review/update of Infection Control and Prevention policies and procedures.
- Oversees Employee Health Program including:
- TB screening tracking (TST/IGRA), Hepatitis B vaccination, and regulatory documentation for employees.
- Training/competency testing of licensed nurses on tuberculin skin tests.
- Oversight of Universal Influenza program and tracking of employee immunizations.
- Reviews Initial Health Survey documentation for new employees and requests appropriate documentation.
- Consults with employees and supervisors when a employee with a communicable disease must be restricted from direct contact with patients or food.
Ensures patients and families receive high-quality, compassionate service that respects individuals’ needs and rights.
- Complies with applicable legal requirements, standards, policies and procedures including the Compliance and Ethics Program, Standard/Code of Conduct, Federal False Claims Act and HIPAA.
- Participates in required orientation and training programs.
- Promptly reports concerns and suspected incidences of non-compliance to supervisor, Compliance Liaison, or the Compliance Officer via the Integrity Hotline.
- Cooperates with monitoring and audit functions and investigations.
- Participates in quality assurance and process improvement activities as requested.
Monday – Friday, 8:00 am–4:30 pm. On-call weekend rotation.
Educational/Vocational Requirements- The Infection Preventionist must be a graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with current RN licensure by the State Board of Nursing.
