We are looking for a committed and enthusiastic individual to work in Specimen Reception at our University Hospital Coventry site and our George Eliot site in Nuneaton. The role requires working accurately under pressure and being patient-focused. Duties include receipt, sorting and processing of samples, assisting laboratory staff with technical work, and entering patient data into the pathology computer system.
Good literacy, numeracy and communication skills are required, as are intermediate IT skills. Applicants should be able to work as part of a team and manage their own workload. Previous data entry or diagnostic pathology experience is advantageous, though full training will be provided.
Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.
Main duties of the jobUnder supervision and according to Standard Operative Procedures, perform basic duties within the laboratory, support other staff, and provide optimum patient care. Book specimens onto the laboratory computer system and serve as the first point of contact for telephone enquiries.
Job responsibilities- Responsible for inputting accurate and timely patient and specimen data into Trust computerised systems.
- Responsible for the safe disposal of contaminated materials, including sharps and confidential waste.
- Undertake first point of contact for all telephone and face‑to‑face enquiries dealing in a professional manner.
- Responsible for the sorting and identifying of specimens received, identifying and taking appropriate action in the event of any discrepancies.
- Undertake preparation of samples for testing by laboratory staff and provide support with basic laboratory tasks as required by supervisor.
- Responsible for the dispatching and posting of samples to authorised persons and outside laboratories ensuring compliance with all statutory regulations.
- Undertake agreed clinical and non‑clinical tasks following training, ensuring referral to appropriate trained staff as required.
