Highways Supervisor

Salford, Greater Manchester | Salary: £47,181 - £50,269 | Expires: 17/08/2026
This role is your chance to direct the on‑ground delivery of highways works and projects at the heart of Salford’s regeneration. Your leadership can ensure that improvements, repairs and refurbishments are delivered on time, on budget and to specification, shaping a city with safer, greener, more efficient transport that links seamlessly with the wider region.
Responsibilities
- Receive work instructions and analyse job requirements, including labour, plant and materials.
- Manage all phases of works activities at sites delivered via internal or third‑party construction teams.
- Manage and supervise in‑house Charge Hands and Operatives, ensuring day‑to‑day personnel, operational and welfare matters are handled and that all staff are competent for the duties performed.
- Allocate works to gangs (in‑house and subcontract) to guarantee that plant and materials are available to complete tasks efficiently.
- Liaise with the Depot Manager regarding fleet, plant and material resources, ensuring items are prepared in advance for the following day’s works.
- Conduct regular site checks for safety and quality compliance and instigate remedial works as required.
- Ensure all operations comply with current HSE legislation.
Qualifications
- Relevant qualifications and proven experience in operational delivery.
- Track record of delivering minor civil engineering works and schemes to budget, deadline and quality requirements.
- Proven technical skills and ability to deliver intended outcomes while working with a variety of skilled staff.
- Experience with manual work, and plant equipment/machinery.
- Willingness and ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Completion of the GM Elevate Leadership Development Programme within the last 2 years is preferable.
