Job Overview

This would be an excellent opportunity to increase your expertise in all aspects of stroke care. The stroke unit (ward 41) has 6 hyper‑acute and 30 acute/rehabilitation beds. The stroke service lies within the Department of Neurosciences and you will join a team that consists of 6 consultant stroke physicians (from different parent specialties: Geriatrics, Acute Medicine, Neurology), 2 Neurology Specialist Registrars, a Geriatric Specialist Registrar and 8 Junior Clinical Fellows, an F1 trainee as well as a 24/7 rota of Stroke Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS), a stroke co‑ordinator and 2 research nurses/facilitators.

The post is based at the University Hospital in Coventry and we admit around 850 patients a year. A dedicated 24/7 thrombolysis service has been running since 2008 and covers a population of about 1 million; we currently treat around 160 patients every year with IV TPA.

A mechanical thrombectomy service is being developed with patients being treated on site and at University Hospital Birmingham. A dedicated ‘one‑stop’ acute TIA clinical run 7 days a week supported by walk‑in carotid ultrasound and MRI services.
