SEND Teaching Assistant KS1 Autism Support
Some pupils need a calm, predictable adult to help them feel safe enough to learn. This role is about being that steady presence during an important transition.
We're looking for a SEND Teaching Assistant to support four Year 1 pupils with autism within a small, adapted provision at mainstream primary school in Coventry. This is a full-time, short-term placement (6 weeks initiailly) covering a staff absence, with the potential to extend depending on recovery timelines. Consistency and continuity matter in this setting, and your role will help maintain both.
The role

* Provide 1:1, 1:2, and small group support for KS1 pupils with autism

* Work primarily within the schools SEN provision during mornings, with classroom-based support in the afternoons

* Support emotional regulation, communication, and access to learning

* Follow clear routines and predictable approaches that help pupils feel secure

* Work closely with an experienced Teaching Assistant and the class teacher

* Contribute to a calm environment where progress is measured in small, steady steps
What we’re looking for

* Experience (6+ months) supporting children or young people with SEND, particularly autism, in an education setting

* Comfort working with pre-verbal pupils and supporting sensory needs

* A calm, patient, and consistent approach

* Confidence working as part of a team and communicating openly

* An understanding that emotional regulation comes before learning

* Bucket time experience is helpful but not essential
What we offer

* Full-time hours, 8:30am to 3:30pm

* Clear routines and a structured setting

* Strong day-to-day team support and SENCO guidance

* A role where expectations are realistic and support is shared
