Learning Teaching Assistant; Hospital School

This HLTA role will not require you to have an in-depth knowledge of the KS3 and KS4 curriculum, as the teaching and detailed marking is provided by specialist teachers who come to teach on the hospital wards for half‑day sessions. The HLTA provides continuity for both secondary‑aged pupils and teachers. The role involves the rapid forging of relationships with pupils (and sometimes their parents/carers) and sharing their knowledge of pupils’ medical, emotional and learning needs with the visiting teachers.

The successful candidate will also provide wellbeing activities for pupils who are medically too unwell for structured work, whether for reasons of physical or mental health. The appointed HLTA will also work one‑to‑one with pupils with SLD (Severe Learning Difficulties) and support colleagues in providing singing and sensory sessions for pupils with PMLD (Pervasive and Multiple Learning Difficulties). A willingness to adapt and learn is essential;

the right candidate can be trained in any areas in which they are inexperienced.

Working hours are 8.30 am – 2.45 pm (Lunch break 12‑1 pm). This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). All candidates must have the Right to Work in the UK. We are currently not offering sponsorship for this role.

We are seeking an HLTA to support children and young people on the wards in a hospital setting, predominantly working with secondary‑aged pupils. However, a primary or special school practitioner may also be suitable for the role. Visits to the hospital are warmly encouraged so prospective candidates can gain a clearer insight into our unique learning setting.
