Clinical Teaching Fellow

The post is part of an innovative and ongoing teaching initiative which seeks to professionalise clinical teaching, at the same time as allowing individuals to develop their own teaching skills and expertise in medical education. Suited to individuals with a keen interest in undergraduate teaching who wish to pursue a career in Medical Education.

The post could be offered as a full time Clinical Teaching Fellow or a 50/50 post with varied roles and responsibilities in an established team structure, an important arm of the clinical teaching staff of Warwick Medical School's principal teaching hospital: the University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust.

The post is aimed at Postgraduate Doctors of all training grades from post FY2 up to senior level Doctors in Training who wish to strengthen their educational credentials and gain additional teaching experience. Every effort will be made to tailor each post to their overall clinical and career needs.

Main duties of the job

Appointees will be expected to contribute to the following areas:

  • Original work on research projects of relevance to medical education. Fellows will have individual projects in their own areas. It is expected that this work should lead to presentations at appropriate professional meetings and publication in relevant journals.
  • Responsible for delivering curriculum MB ChB across the 4-year Programme including teaching, assessments, pastoral care and quality assurance.
  • Post holders are responsible for supporting the well-established Acute Block. This includes leading clinical simulation sessions and debrief, small group teaching and mentoring.
  • Supporting the teaching within Phase 3 Specialty Clinical Placements (Musculoskeletal, Child Health, Womens Health, Care of Surgical Patient and Care of Medical Patient) within individual fellows specialty areas.
  • Supporting clinical simulation in delivering acute block simulation and opportunities in Postgraduate simulation training. There are additional simulation activities and projects available to a fellow with a particular interest in simulation, playing a key role in the design, development, delivery, and evaluation of simulation-based education.
  • Delivering regular bedside teaching sessions.
  • Assorted other educational activities which may vary according to the needs of the service. These will include organisation and participation in clinical exams, a revision course before finals, marking elective and other reports.
Clinical Responsibilities

Full time Teaching Fellow:
Fellows are encouraged to spend one session per week working in their clinical specialty by arrangement. This is a good opportunity to allow participation in specialist clinics or training areas within this University Teaching Hospital. Clinical time can be condensed to allow appropriate clinical experience, for example a full day for a theatre list.

50/50 Teaching Fellow:
Fellows will spend 50% of their time working within their chosen specialty. Clinical time will be within the normal working day, with no commitment to on-call working. Organising suitable clinical positions forms part of the recruitment process. Opportunity for clinical on‑call working may be negotiated locally after appointment when shifts are deemed to have no impact on the daytime working pattern.

  • It is the intention that fellows to emerge from these posts appropriately qualified to continue a specialty career and carry recognition as educators.
  • You will be allocated an educational supervisor for your education activities. Appraisals of your progress will form part of the supervision.
  • You will be expected to complete PGCert in Medical Education (if not already undertaken a similar qualification) at Warwick University.
  • Specific training for the post includes specific certification as a WMS clinical examiner.
  • Opportunity to apply for a second year in post for doctors demonstrating desirable progression in teaching, research, and leadership skills as evaluated by lead CTF supervisors.
