Position: Outreach Tutor BSL / MAKA

Overview

As a 1:1 Outreach Tutor in Birmingham you will create, plan, and deliver personalised lessons tailored to each pupil's individual needs, helping to bridge gaps in education while increasing engagement, confidence, and attainment. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced teacher looking to step away from the traditional classroom and make a meaningful difference through bespoke, one-to‑one teaching.

Many pupils have been out of education for an extended period, making confidence and motivation low. Your role will re‑engage them with learning, establish positive routines, and provide the encouragement and support needed to achieve their potential.

Experience supporting pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), including use of Makaton and British Sign Language (BSL) to promote communication and inclusion, is highly desirable.

Role Details
  • Location: Birmingham, within the community or the pupil's home
  • Type of work: Contract, temporary
  • Start Date: ASAP
  • Duration: Until the pupil can reintegrate into a suitable school placement / Ongoing
  • Hours: Part‑time, approximately 15 hours per week per pupil
  • Pay: From £22 per hour
  • Working pattern: Flexible, arranged around the availability of the pupil and their family
Requirements
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent teaching qualification
  • UK classroom teaching experience
  • Experience working with SEND, SEMH, or pupils who are disengaged from education
  • Experience using Makaton and/or BSL to support communication and learning
  • Creative, patient, adaptable, and committed to delivering engaging, personalised lessons
  • Ability to build positive relationships and inspire confidence in young people
  • Have the right to work in the UK
  • Hold an enhanced Child Barred List DBS registered with the Update Service, or be willing to apply for one
  • Provide two professional child‑related references
