Position: Safeguarding and Welfare Advisor -Term Time Only, 15hpw, Temporary until 18/12/26

Strictly No Agencies Purpose of Job

The Safeguarding and Welfare Advisor will act predominantly as front line support for students. In addition supporting the safeguarding function of the college. This will entail dealing with safeguarding concerns at they arise, liaising with the Head of Student Services and Safeguarding and the Assistant Manager of Student Services and Safeguarding. They will also plan and deliver mentoring and pastoral support for students in a professional way in order to remove barriers to learning in relation to behaviour, motivation, aspirations and academic achievements.

Accountabilities

The duties and responsibilities in this position are inherently of a professional nature and are wide ranging. They include, but are not restricted to the following:

  • Support the safeguarding function of the college by dealing with incidents and liaising with parents and carers.
  • Liaise with key internal and external agencies, local authorities, employers, students, staff to ensure effective and timely communication and information sharing (as appropriate).
  • Maintain student support records plus any that pertain to safeguarding recording all details relating to student support and monitor developments against each individual student, ensuring these records are held as highly confidential on a need to know basis.
  • Responsible for a case load of students identified at risk of not completing / not achieving their learning aims through individualised and targeted support.
  • Assess and prioritise referrals according to need
  • Help students to identify personal, community, family and college-based issues which are having an adverse effect on them
  • Develop and manage mentoring relationships to address identified needs
  • Provide immediate and first line support to students who may be in crisis or whose behaviour may cause concern, referring to internal staff and external agencies as appropriate.
  • To support students individually or in groups in their social and emotional development.
  • To support students through personal difficulties and to support their learning outside of teaching time where this is required, to ensure they are retained and achieve their learning goals.
  • Support the tutorial process by assisting students to meet deadlines and targets in collaboration with tutors and other curriculum staff.
  • Follow up any issues affecting attendance and punctuality of identified students and, in liaison with vocational staff, provide appropriate support to enable them to return to college and continue on course.
  • Facilitate communication and organisation with internal staff and external agencies for students with pastoral, health and other support needs (eg parents/carers, and staff ALS, safeguarding, counselling, housing, substance misuse teams, CAMHS).
  • Responsible for the operation of additional services such as C-Card sign-up and distribution and support other activities to promote health and wellbeing activities and events.
  • Assist with admissions, transition (with multi-agency working where appropriate), enrolment and induction/initial assessment and attend open events as necessary.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities and participate in team/other meetings, including attendance at vocational course team meetings.
  • Ensure that all students have access to appropriate support irrespective of their individual needs and personal circumstances
  • Comply with college policies, procedures and quality assurance systems
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties as may be assigned by the line manager.
  • At all times deliver a professional approach in all aspect of work, treating all staff, students and the wider college community with respect.
