PhD Studentships in Engineering (High-Level Funding Opportunities)

University of Warwick – Faculty of Science, Engineering Department, Coventry, United Kingdom

General Description

The University of Warwick is offering fully funded PhD studentships within the Faculty of Science, specifically in the Engineering Department. These studentships are designed to support outstanding candidates in pursuing doctoral research across a wide range of engineering disciplines. The programme is part of Warwick’s commitment to advancing high‑impact research and developing future leaders in academia, industry, and innovation.

Successful candidates will undertake independent research under the supervision of leading academics, contributing to cutting‑edge projects in areas such as systems engineering, energy, materials, manufacturing, and related interdisciplinary fields. The PhD programme typically spans three to four years of full‑time study and includes access to state‑of‑the‑art facilities, research training and professional development opportunities.

The funding package generally includes full coverage of tuition fees (at the UK or international rate, depending on the specific studentship), along with an annual stipend in line with UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) guidelines. Additional support may be available for research expenses, training and conference participation.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain, a strong undergraduate degree (normally a first‑class or upper second‑class honours degree or equivalent) in engineering or a closely related discipline. A relevant master’s degree may be advantageous for certain projects.

Candidates must demonstrate a strong academic record, research potential and motivation to undertake advanced study. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet the University’s English language requirements. Eligibility for specific funding schemes may depend on residency status and other criteria.

Required Expertise/Skills

A solid foundation in engineering principles relevant to the chosen research area is essential. Applicants should demonstrate analytical thinking, problem‑solving ability and a strong interest in research and innovation.

Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are important for engaging with academic supervisors, presenting research findings and contributing to collaborative projects. The ability to work independently as well as part of a multidisciplinary team is expected.

Salary Details

Fully funded studentships typically include full tuition fee coverage and an annual tax‑free stipend aligned with UKRI rates. Additional funding for research training and conference participation may also be provided.

Final date to receive applications

Deadlines vary depending on the specific studentship and funding scheme.
