Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Optometrist to join our Hospital Optometry team on a 12‑month fixed‑term basis to cover maternity leave. This post will provide valuable experience within hospital optometry across both University Hospital Coventry and Hospital of St Cross, Rugby, working closely with our multidisciplinary team of Optometrists, Ophthalmologists, Orthoptists and Nursing staff.
This is an ideal role for Optometrists seeking to expand their clinical skills and experience within a hospital setting. The post is open to both newly qualified and experienced Optometrists. Please see attached Band 6 job description for further details.

Responsibilities- Autonomous independent practitioner managing patient caseloads in Core optometric services, including routine and diagnostic refraction, paediatric refraction, theatre refractions, specialist medical contact lens management, visual impairment rehabilitation, in‑house spectacle dispensing and eye casualty triage.
- Work closely with the Principal and Lead Optometrists to deliver a comprehensive range of Core Optometric services and advanced extended role clinics to the highest standard of quality and care.
- Promote best practice throughout Optometry and provide expert advice to Optometrists, Medical staff and Allied Health Professionals in the management of complex cases.
- Oversee training and personally undertake specialist clinical activity requiring extensive knowledge, experience and expertise (e.g. foreign body removal from the cornea).
- Apply advanced specialised clinical techniques—including corneal pachymetry, ocular B‑scan and corneal topography—to provide specialised clinical interpretation for the consultant.
- Participate in the audit frameworks within the department and cooperate fully in any audit of clinical work and competency assessments undertaken by leads and management. Assist in implementing any identified improvements.
- Prepare for and provide required immunisation and vaccination report from UK occupational health provider or UK GP.
- Prepare to contribute to the Saturday morning Eye Casualty Triage service.
