The maternity department at UHCW cares for around 6,000 pregnant patients a year and is a busy tertiary unit with level 3 neonatal services.

The maternity triage department sees approximately 1,100 maternity patients each month.

An exciting new opportunity is available to join our maternity team of ACP Midwives. UHCW Maternity have a small team of ACP Midwives which we are looking to increase. The role is for a Maternity triage ACP Midwife to join the team to ensure a 7-day service of timely clinical reviews for maternity patients attending the area.

The ACP Midwives for Maternity triage will play an instrumental role in the implementation of the NHSE national maternity triage specification document and recommendations.

The Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) is required to be an experienced registered midwife who has completed an MSc in Advanced clinical practice, who will exercise autonomy and decision making in a context of complexity, uncertainty and varying levels of risk, holding accountability for decisions made. The ACP will be able to manage clinical care in partnership with individuals, families and carers responding to differences in cultures, demographics and populations.

They will utilise critical analysis and synthesis in dealing with complex problems across the maternity service, enabling innovative solutions to enhance experience and improve outcomes for maternity patients.

Responsibilities include:

  • The ACP Midwife for maternity triage will act autonomously to assess, prioritise and provide expert clinical midwifery care which contributes to the patients' treatment plan to ensure that optimum physical, psychological, and social care needs are met and ensures quality care.
  • They will undertake an initial assessment to determine differential diagnosis, utilising advanced critical thinking and decision‑making skills, deciding when necessary to refer to senior clinical colleagues.
  • The successful postholder will autonomously assess, diagnose, and have the legal authority to independently prescribe, as an independent prescriber responsible and accountable for the assessment of patients with midwifery and obstetric complications and for clinical management decisions.
