Job summary

This is an opportunity for a seconded post to Sandwell Community Services in the Working Age Mental Health Division. The secondment is between October 2026 and June 2027. Any interested applicants must be supported by their line manager and professional lead BEFORE applying for this role. The secondment has arisen as a result of the incumbent post holder being seconded themselves to an alternative role within the Trust.

Sandwell Community Services are 1 of 4 locality CMHT services offering MDT support to clients with a range of secondary MH issues. The Consultant Psychology Lead in this team is accountable for the following within the team:

  • professional and clinical oversight and leadership of the therapy provision
  • outcome metrics relating to therapy provision and demand and capacity monitoring
  • implementation of the psychological workforce plan
  • supporting seamless interfaces between Sandwell community services and other aspects of the care pathway
  • for own professional practice in the delivery of highly specialist psychological care to clients with highly complex and contentious mental health conditions or learning disabilities which include challenging behaviours and possible risk of physical aggression.
Main duties of the job
  • Exercise supervisory/professional responsibility for all psychological therapists in Sandwell community services
  • Provide leadership in multi-disciplinary training and development across the service
  • Provide leadership in service audit and development in the service
  • provide leadership in service evaluation and research
  • Ensure that a psychological perspective is brought to service redesign and cultural change.

Job responsibilities

This is a 3 day (0.6wte) secondment opportunity in Sandwell CMHT services. The post holder will work closely with Community and Senior Operational Managers to improve performance and quality metrics in the team, in line with the NHS National Oversight Framework. They will be professionally overseen by the Divisional Consultant Psychology Lead and will work alongside the other Consultant Community Psychologists and CEN Consultant Psychologist, to ensure that psychological provision is robust and consistent across all locality areas.

They will professionally oversee the senior psychologists in the service and will undertake recruitment activities as required, to enhance the workforce component of the team.

Person Specification Education/Qualification Essential
  • Post-graduate doctoral level training in Applied Psychology (or its equivalent as accredited by the BPS including models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology.
  • Post doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice.
  • HCPC registration as an Applied Psychologist.
  • Trained in clinical supervision and the supervision of doctoral trainees.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
Desirable
  • Registration with BPS
Experience Essential
  • Substantial experience in working as a qualified applied psychologist within the mental health, including a wide variety of client groups
  • Substantial experience in Teaching, training, clinical supervision and field supervisor for doctoral theses.
  • Substantial experience in providing clinical and professional leadership to other qualified and non-qualified members of the profession.
Knowledge Essential
  • Evidence- based practice relevant to the role.
  • Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health and its implications for clinical practice.
Skills/Personal Qualities Essential
  • Provide effective clinical leadership.
  • Provide effective teaching, training, consultancy and clinical supervision for the multidisciplinary team.
  • Utilise appropriate clinical governance. mechanisms within own work.
