Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Diabetes team as a Specialist Nurse. Our service cares for approximately 250 children and young people aged 0‑19 years. This role is a fixed‑term contract for 12 months covering 37.5 hours across the week and requires the successful applicant to be flexible to respond to the demands of the service. The service is based at UHCW and works within the population of Coventry and Rugby, operating across two hospital sites.
Secondment will be considered for internal candidates. If you are successful after interview, you must obtain approval from your current line manager to accept the offer. Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.
Main duties of the jobThe role will involve providing expert advice to children and young people with diabetes and their families in both the community and hospital setting. The Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse will act as a professional resource for the multi‑professional team. Current experience of working with children and young people with diabetes is essential.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a keen interest in supporting and educating children, young people and families with managing diabetes from diagnosis, and will be motivated to learn. They will provide ward staff education, including delivering a mandatory training programme and supporting ward link nurses. The post will involve home visits, school support and working across two hospital sites, so an ability to travel is essential.
The role involves providing advice and support during childhood and throughout the progression into our adolescent clinic for children and young people with diabetes. The successful candidate must enjoy working with children and young people of all ages and demonstrate leadership qualities, excellent communication skills and be highly motivated to work with the team to continue to develop and enhance our service.
Jobresponsibilities
- Build professional caring relationships with children, young people with diabetes and their families and carers, communicating effectively and empathetically with regard to their developmental and cognitive ability.
- Support, mentor and supervise students and ward nurses, medical students and members of the multi‑disciplinary team as appropriate.
- Support and enable children and families/carers to make informed decisions relating to their treatment and management.
- Utilise all local and national information and ICT systems to secure accurate and timely resource data.
- Accountable for own actions in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct and contribute to the achievement of corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times, including all aspects of child protection.
- Maintain high quality service within a complex and challenging environment with often conflicting targets.
- Promote best practice and implement a review process that looks at quality and efficiency to meet the needs of patients and service.
- Act as a resource for staff, advising on national, local and Trust policy and procedures/guidelines and ensuring that clinical governance is embedded in practice.
- Actively contribute to policy development and implementation of policies, guidelines and procedures for the department, undertaking highly specialised technical and/or practical skills to ensure optimum patient management (including complex patient monitoring, equipment and invasive tests and procedures where relevant).
- Current professional registration (RSCN/RN Child).
- Evidence of continuous professional development.
- Evidence of current or recent paediatric diabetes clinical experience.
- Relevant qualification in children's diabetes care.
- Teaching and assessing qualification.
- Study at level 6 (degree/diploma).
- Professional clinical experience in diabetes.
- Proven ability to work autonomously and within a team.
