Caudwell Marine (CM) is a start‑up business backed by the billionaire and philanthropist John Caudwell and is developing an innovative, patented outboard motor for launch into key markets and sectors.
The CM organisation is a small, experienced team of people who are passionate about successfully bringing this technologically leading outboard motor to market. Each team member has a ‘hands on’ approach and supports each other for the benefit of the programme.
Quality is a pivotal role within the organization, responsible for ensuring that every outboard motor manufactured meets the highest standards of performance, reliability, and safety. As a growing and dynamic team, we are passionate about bringing this cutting‑edge technology to market. At CM, every team member plays a vital role in shaping the future of our product. With a collaborative and hands‑on approach, we foster an environment of mutual support, where each person’s expertise drives the success of our ambitious plan.
The Metrology Technician plays a pivotal part in both proactive and reactive quality – ensuring that part maturity is understood and aligns with expectations & specifications at all phases of development and series production. This role supports the engineering and quality teams by maintaining calibration standards for all internal measurement systems, performing dimensional inspections, and ensuring that all products meet defined specifications.
Responsibilities:- Conducting dimensional inspections of an array of components using industry standard measurement equipment to confirm adherence to specifications, standards and customer requirements.
- Output of detailed measurement and inspection reports to support peers and cross functional teams in understanding pedigree of components & assemblies.
- Technical support and advice on measurement methods/techniques to cross functional teams, including supporting detailed problem‑solving investigations to assist understanding potential issues.
- Calibration and maintenance of precision measuring instruments, including gauges, micrometres, and Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs), in line with ISO standards and customer requirements.
- Maintenance of accurate calibration records and inspection reports to support quality management systems (ISO 9001).
- Support to internal verification processes such as Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA) and Statistical Process Controls (SPC) where a requirement.
- Support to external customer/internal audits to showcase conformity to calibration standards & procedures throughout the product lifecycle.
- Ownership of metrology workflows, standards and internal processes to support transparent KPI monitoring & tracking.
- Setup and ongoing development of a dedicated metrology room to support quality and business requirements.
Experience:
- Proven experience in metrology or complex dimensional inspection within an engineering or manufacturing environment.
- Preferable - At least 5 years in a ‘blue chip’ manufacturing / engineering organisation where ‘automotive/aerospace level’ quality, procurement and supply chain processes have been demonstrated.
- Awareness of quality management systems like ISO
9001 and their importance within an engineering environment. - Experience in creating processes and procedures to support defined KPIs associated with metrology topics.
- Ideally has also worked in a Small, Medium Enterprise (SME) and is able to demonstrate the ability to ‘roll their sleeves up’ and personally get things done as part of a cross functional team.
Skills:
- Data driven – always striving to use data to drive discussions.
- Technical skills and ability to understand specifications, documents and manuals without support or supervision.
- Strong understanding of measurement principles, calibration processes, and GD&T.
- Ability to use CMMs and other precision measuring equipment such as vernier, micrometre, gauges etc
- Experience with programming including CCM programming – writing standardised measurement & inspection programs from scratch.
