Installation Technician, Field/Service Technician
Position Summary
The Underground Equipment Operator is an entry‑level position in the construction, maintenance and repair of electrical underground distribution systems. The role works at various locations and may require travel to other states depending on customer demands.
Essential Functions- Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de‑energized underground systems.
- Assist with installing underground transformers and replacing fuses.
- Clear faulted circuits and systems.
- Operate in proximity to energized high‑voltage systems with skill and care to protect lives.
- Maintain company vehicles, equipment and tools in good working order.
- Perform rigorous physical labor.
- Use company radio and operate heavy equipment.
- Understand basic rigging, hand tools, and equipment setup.
- Receive and follow directions; learn basic knowledge of materials used.
- Identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit and be familiar with induced voltage.
- Assist with installation and hookup of a single‑phase transformer.
- Understand grounding concepts and basic equipment setup.
- Work in heights and/or confined spaces, while observing minimum approach distances.
- Check voltage on transformers and follow flag & tag procedures.
- Install and remove service connections.
- Inspect rubber goods and personal protective equipment properly.
- Wear required personal protective equipment and use Kellum grips properly.
- Identify different types of materials used.
- Glove and work on live high‑voltage distribution lines when required.
- Work outdoors in inclement weather.
- Perform all other related work as required to complete the job.
- 5‑year minimum of recent field experience.
- Effective communication in English.
- Obtain a Commercial Driver’s License permit within 60 days; existing license preferred.
- Travel long distances on short notice when required.
- Work extended periods in various locations when required.
- Lift more than 50 lbs.
- Inspect rubber goods and PPE properly.
- Work overtime and outside normal schedule, including weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
Regular talking or hearing, frequent standing, walking, hand use to fingers, handling and feeling, and reaching with hands and arms. The job requires lifting, handling, and manipulations typical for underground electrical work.
Work EnvironmentFrequent exposure to fumes, airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and vibration. Occasional exposure to extreme conditions at construction sites. The noise level can be loud. Work is performed outdoors and in varying weather conditions.
