MLT/MLS/Lab Technician – St. Elizabeth Healthcare
Job Summary
This position performs laboratory testing in the Clinical Laboratory. The Medical Technologist performs moderate and highly complex testing, responsible for the analysis of laboratory specimens and subsequent result reporting according to laboratory protocol and procedures. - Full‑time, 24‑hour shifts: 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.
- 212 hours per week
- Understand all principles involved in assigned procedures and apply this knowledge to clinical situations and patient management.
- Determine specimen integrity issues, patient medication or other interfering substances that could affect test results.
- Operate, troubleshoot and maintain laboratory equipment, supplies, ensuring high quality, accurate and cost‑effective results.
- Ensure accuracy of testing per manufacturer guidelines and applicable regulations.
- Interface with Hot Lines and service personnel to oversee proper functionality and repair of instruments.
- Report results within time limits, including STAT, critical values and other categories as defined by laboratory policy.
- Record patient data accurately in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Hospital Information System (HIS) for timely results.
- Collect and process specimens according to laboratory policies for accurate testing.
- Perform and document quality control as specified, analyzing results before reporting.
- Participate in Quality Assurance activities, initiating corrective action for any deviations.
- Perform proficiency testing in accordance with the Laboratory Quality Plan.
- Ensure a safe environment by using protective barrier equipment correctly.
- Participate in Laboratory Safety audits, training and policy review.
- Engage in continuing education, in‑service training and school lectures as needed.
- Ensure cost‑saving activities align with financial budgetary parameters, such as reagent ordering and waste minimization.
- Perform any other duties as assigned.
- Baccalaureate Degree in Biological Science with completion of a NAACLS‑approved Medical Technology program and certification from a nationally recognized certifying agency.
- OR Baccalaureate Degree in Biological Science with ASCP Certification.
- OR CLIA 88 Equivalent (HEW/HHS Certification).
- OR Registry Eligible:
Baccalaureate Degree in Biological Science, completion of a NAACLS accredited MT/CLS program, and certification within one year of hire or eligibility. - Registry Eligible for a Section Certification:
Baccalaureate Degree with at least five years of technical experience in one of the clinical laboratory areas.
- Minimum of 6–12 months of clinical internship as part of an approved MLS training program.
- None reported for specialized knowledge.
- Non‑Exempt FLSA status.
