Provides direct patient care to all patient populations in the postoperative setting. Addresses psychosocial, physical, and general aspects of care related to the surgical environment, assists with PACU equipment maintenance, participates in performance improvement, and monitors patients’ physiological status. Communicates continuously with surgeons and anesthesiologists, and may serve as charge nurse.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities- Able to perform a head‑to‑toe assessment on all patient populations and reassessments per facility policy.
- Demonstrates knowledge of perioperative factors that alter the immediate postoperative phase.
- Identifies physical symptoms and changes and takes appropriate action in a timely manner.
- Shows proficiency with airway management, including equipment use.
- Assesses cardio‑respiratory systems and provides appropriate treatment.
- Observes behavioral and physiologic changes due to medications, documents actions.
- Assesses and manages pain, educates patient and family on pain management.
- Assists physicians with procedures and follows medical/surgical asepsis.
- Administers medications correctly by age and clinical condition, applying the five medication rights.
- Implements safety measures to prevent self‑harm or harm to others.
- Assesses level of consciousness, promotes activity, and encourages deep breathing exercises.
- Knowledgeable about anesthetic drugs, actions, and side effects.
- Familiar with arterial lines, spinal and epidural catheters, and emergency medications.
- Familiar with peripheral nerve block procedures and documentation.
- Formulates individualized plans of care, revises plans as needed, and evaluates effectiveness.
- Responds to emergencies per ACLS or PALS protocol.
- Communicates patient status upon transfer from PACU to the receiving unit.
- Maintains effective communication with coworkers and the healthcare team.
- Orients new staff and supports team development.
- Ensures compliance with regulatory agency requirements and hospital policies.
- Demonstrates knowledge of cardiac monitoring, identifies dysrhythmias, and treats accordingly.
- Performs 12‑lead EKG as indicated.
- Performs point‑of‑care testing or moderate complexity testing, interprets results, and reports abnormal findings.
- Completes assigned duties consistently and on schedule.
- Documentation meets current standards and policies.
- Safely operates and manages equipment.
- Treats patients and families with respect, dignity, and cultural sensitivity.
- Utilizes initiative and maintains steady productivity.
- Makes daily patient assignments, monitors the surgery schedule, and reports changes.
- Supports and monitors staff, ensures staffing efficiency, and supervises quality of care.
- Controls supplies and equipment, directs inventory management.
- Maintains cleanliness and proper functioning of equipment.
- Communicates pertinent issues to the OR Director.
- Provides orientation to new staff and assists in evaluation.
- Promotes the hospital’s mission, values, and goals.
- Performs QA/PI activities and reports results.
- Completes additional duties as assigned by the Director.
