Day-to-Day Responsibilities of an Anaesthetist

The main priority for anaesthetists is to ensure the safety of patients who will undergo surgery. Some of the most common daily duties of an anaesthetist include:

  • Assessing a patient’s suitability for surgery
  • Creating anaesthetic plans
  • Preparing patients for potential risks and ensuring they understand what will happen during and after their operation
  • Administering anaesthesia to patients before they are due for their procedure
  • Monitoring patients whilst they are under anaesthesia in the operating theatre
  • Performing administrative duties such as filling out reports of patients

Qualifications Needed to be an Anaesthetist

To become an anaesthetist, you must go to a university and complete a degree that is recognised by the General Medical Council (GMC) or complete a doctor degree apprenticeship, which will take around five years. From there, you will need to do a two-year foundation training programme which will allow you to undergo specialist training.
