Job Description

Job Title:
Advanced Machinist

Responsible to:
Production Manager

The post holder will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Liaise with the production manager and production supervisor daily to ensure you have full understanding of the production requirements.
  • Work together within a team of advanced machinists and setters to ensure all aspects of machine setting and operation are carried out within required time frames, and machines are utilised effectively.
  • Take full ownership of all aspects of the CNC machine setup including tooling build, work holding loading/alignment and datum setting, NC program editing and creation if required (online and offline), program transfer to the machine, followed by full prove out of component parts programs.
  • Independently problem-solve the machining process and make necessary machine and/or program adjustments to ensure parts conform to specification.
  • Demonstrate effective time management as an individual whilst carrying out the role
  • Fully inspect components to ensure they meet the customer requirements using precision measuring equipment and customer supplied documents.
  • Complete paperwork including job cards and NCRs when necessary.
  • Ensure the engineering databases are kept up to date with the latest revision of electronic data including NC programs and other essential information.
  • Provide support to a team of operators and apprentices by providing knowledge, experience and troubleshooting advice.
  • Assist in providing the necessary on the job training to help upskill and develop the team.
  • Finish parts post machining before they proceed to final fettling/ treatments/ dispatch
  • In the absence of the production supervisor, assist in allocating tasks to a team of operators as and when required.
  • Comply with all BPE housekeeping, 5S, health and safety, quality standards/legislation and contribute towards making improvements.
  • Carry out and participate in relevant training as required.
  • Must be flexible to meet company demands throughout the year including working additional hours when required
  • Any other reasonable duties as required by the Management team.
Job Specification

Essential Criteria

  • Extensive proven experience in the efficient setting and operation of 3 and 5 axis CNC machines (minimum 7 years)
  • Proven machining related problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work on own initiative as well as within a team environment
  • Be able to read and interpret engineering drawings competently.
  • Excellent communication skills

Desirable Criteria

  • At least HNC/HND or similar qualification in a mechanical engineering or equivalent discipline.
  • Previous experience of CAM software
  • Have full working knowledge of Heidenhain CNC control.
  • Have a high standard of PC literacy - use of Microsoft Office applications especially Word and Excel.
